Thanks to Sai on the chat, I started watching the Clannad anime series last week and finished up today with the series and the Movie. Sai said that there's an after story coming soon ... so I'm looking forward to that.
Clannad started of as a dating sim (non-eroge/PG-13) and then was made into an anime. As you'd expect, it's pretty much a harem storyline ... which I've ben told is pretty true to the game. I don't mind harem or formulaic storys if the characters are good and the story is well written. This one is and the characters are. I've seen these character archetypes in other anime, but these seemed fresh and the main story line in which they all interacted was good.
If you are prone to tears, make sure you have an industrial size container of tissues when watching this (especially the movie) ... as you'll cry from both the funny, sad and heart warming aspects of this anime.
The manga was ok ... seemed much more disjointed. This is the first time I felt that I got more detail from the anime than the manga. Typically it's the other way around.
Disclaimer - I did not cry during this series or the movie But wow ... this was some stuff
Has anyone else seen this series? If so, what are your impressions?

Clannad was one of the anime I've seen in the same period when I watched Air. (When I find something that interests me, I search for relations, this time, the creator Key)
The airy comedy and the drama blended in quite well and I thought the story not too bad. It is well characterised though as Laz said, the archetypes exist in their other anime such as Air. Overall, the series was a great joy to watch. It's one of those productions which gives you something to dream about.
The movie, being made by a different director started off a bit "boring" to me. The series and the movie are way different. Even the Dango Daikazoku song is different from each other. Then the tension built up with Nagisa's death and unexpectedly, I became transfixed for the rest of the film. There is strong drama there believe me, I admit I started tearing a bit when Tomoya finally acknowledged his daughter.
The series is a very good watch, I recommend it to everyone who enjoys some drama while having a few good laughs.
The 24th episode (OVA) wasn't too bad. Tomoyo is quite likeable, but then, so is every other girl in the story. Hehe.
I'm really looking forward to the After Story episodes though it is currently airing in Japan so it'll be a long wait until all of them are out and subbed.
I've started watching Clannad After Story and I must say how I love it! I think it could turn out actually better than the first season though it's a little early to say. I'll need to finish it first of course...
The mood it sets is absolutely amazing! The comedy, the music, the emotional scenes from light to intense and even the art is super! All I know is this beautiful anime is going to be my next top love for the moment.
I agree Junpei ... I've been watching it to. Ultimately you know how it's going to end ... but the trip there is good and meaningful and I'm expecting an emotional end to this series. One of those sad but a good kind of sad, endings.
