i was watchin Hoshi no Koe this mornin and i noticed that near the start when Noburo and Mikako are riding on the bike and see the the Lysithea, Noburo says 'that's the Cosmonaut ship Lysithea'
And part 2 of Byousoku 5 centimeters is called 'Cosmonaut'
not sure if anyone has noticed that before, just thought it was interesting

| The general meaning of cosmonaut is someone who travels in space; an astronaut. I think it's a Russian word. |

Wasn't even thinking it for a moment.
Just a play of words. |

Maybe worth thinking about:
The first human being in space was called a Cosmonaut (from the USSR), and there, of course, this person was one hundred percent alone.
Shinkai's favorite author (Haruki Murakami) also wrote a book called "Sputnik Sweetheart" which riffs on such concepts.
So, could be an homage |

Maybe...good point davus, only Makoto will know...
That's a excelent book (Sputnik, meu amor), but Kafka à beira-mar (Kafka on the shore)...is awesome
I´m starting the, After Dark os passageiros da noite (After Dark), looks also excelent.... _________________

Hm well the lost-in-space thing has been in cultural DNA for a long time
I am beginning to think that the symbolism in Kanae's surfboard is more just in the ankle-strap. It is like the tether to the spacesuit in "2001: A Space Odyssey." All that holds a person from the void, and that eventually gets cut (poor Kanae <3<3 - or is it in fact Tohno that gets sucked in the abyss....).
I think Shinkai has mentioned Arthur Clarke as an influence as well, cf. the Ezo tower in PPED....
O/T on Murakami: Please try "South of the Border West of the Sun"
