For the English names of a couple of the films, I wonder why they altered the titles rather than simply translating what they mean.

Japanese title: Hoshi no Koe
English title: Voices of a Distant Star
Japanese title meaning: Star's Voice/Voice of Star

Japanese title: Kumo no Mukou, Yakusoku no Basho
English title: The Place Promised in our Early Days
Japanese title meaning: The other side of clouds/The opposite side of clouds, the place promised

I don't know... does this make any differences really? It's probably just like the script where they change lines and other things too. Just to let you people know. What do you think?

Literal translations don't work well between english and japanese. I was sad when I heard they changed Kanea's name to Serina in Cosmonaut though T_____________________T

At first, this puzzled me. I think what you meant to say was that they changed Kanae's voice actress' name to Serena. Those darn dubber!

Now that the spambot dug the thread out for us I though I might add my 2 cents.

I really loved the fansub translation of "Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Land" - I think that was a great translation that captured the movie's feel very well. The official title feels really dull and unimaginative.

What I hope for is that if there is a western release of Hoshioi, they won't keep that horrendous sub-title and I can't really wrap my mind around what the Comix Wave guys were thinking when they decided to use this as an official translation (maybe it's the Japanese tradition of super-long titles? Like "Ano hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai" .

Of course the shinkai-unrelated king of failed title translations was "Kimi ga Nozomu Eien" ("The Eternity You Wish For") translated as "Rumbling Hearts".
There's no way you will make me watch something named "Rumbling Hearts" but give me "The Eternity" any day. Very Happy

I have a feeling that the official title was chosen largely to avoid legal issues with "Beyond the Cloud" (In fact, Wikipedia points to other titles with that name, along with Shinkai's movie). Remember that ADV later went bankrupt and had to restructure (now as Section23); at the time I seriously doubt that ADV was rolling in cash and any legal challenge to the title, as much as they may have been in the right, would have probably been crippling to the business.

I have a feeling that "Rumbling Hearts" was similar, as IMDB brings up similar titles, yet searching "Rumbling Hearts" will only have the anime show up.

It sucks, but I could definitely understand the business reasons for these titles.

Hey, I didn't think of that. I just assumed that the titles were chosen for the sake of simplicity - in sort of a "this sounds too artsy, it might not sell well" kind of thinking.

Well, it still might be the case for KGNE - according to its wikipedia page the translators took a lot of liberties. It also seems "Rumbling Hearts" was a subtitle of the Japanese PS2 version so it's not like FUNimation cooked that up.
