I loved the way Takaki's thoughts were portrayed and the little things, that add to the story. One thing that comes to mind was the man who closed the train door with an annoyed sound.
I was wondering who the whole time though, where's the parents??? But that is just a plot device for a better story, parents would most likely not let Takaki do that on a night like that one!
But like Laz said Shinkai like's just being honest and laying the story out. So what would the parents add to the story? Nothing. |

| I kind of find it hard to lay out my thoughts on this first part into words. I know I have a lot in myself so I might come back later when I know what to say. |

I was watching this movie again the other day (on my PS3 ... yaa for me) and something I wanted to just throw out to the group was ... while on the train, already very late, Takaki says ...
"Please don't wait ... I wish you have gone home already" about Akari. What was that all about?
I guess maybe he was just scared about visiting with Akari once again ... but it seems kind of an odd sentiment to have on the way to visit you care about deeply.

| It's just the way he write's usually the character at one point of the story says a phase which tries to sum up there feelings in one sentence. I believe he was just worried that he was hurting her by being late. I don't think his phase can be taken literally. |

I thought he was worried about her. It was late at night and there was a blizzard going on. (Er... I think there was, anyway.)
Either way, I got the impression that he was just worried about her. |

Yes, what Menasha and Phantast said are of course true. I think Takaki was probably not only worried about his lateness which could hurt Akari but the pain he endured knowing she was also worried about him.
The most pain you could go through is not just having to worry about someone, but the double pain of having someone worry about you at the same time. |

So just that he would feel better knowing that she was not there waiting?
I kinda got the vibe that maybe i she wasn't there .. he wouldn't have to face the feelings he had for her. Maybe a little more selfish motive than just worrying about Akari being out late in the snow. |

Just a little trivia...
Yesterday, I was having my own little Shinkai mini-fest (after reading AT's essay), watching all four movies in order, when I noticed something in 5 cm. Early in Story 1, when Takaki is in a store buying a magazine, the cover photo of the one he selects is actually a scene from The Place Promised. I checked this later to be sure. As to which scene, I'll just leave that one for y'all to find out.
(I'm from the South, so I can say "y'all.")
