With Shinkai back home and in preparation to begin his 4th film, what are your thoughts on what direction he might go this time?

Girl & Cat stories

Will it be Intergalactic?

Another alternate timeline?

Perhapse he knows of some agricultural species that drops a leaf or flower that falls for an hour or as well blooms or lives once every whatever years?

So what do you think?

There are many ways to go......but what is the "Shinkai Way"

Is there even a "Shinkai Way" to begin with.

Shinkai has been describe as the Japanese Ridley Scott.....with his ability to not not bring a film to life in a visceral way, but also show excellent storytelling ability, and a somewhat meticulous, if not methodical methodology in visualizing key animation sequences on a cinematography level.

So......read and please leave you thoughts or perhapse wishes on what you think might be realized or hoping that might be realized.

Well, I see a kind of pattern here:
1. After "Voices," which was short and centered on just two characters, "Place" was made a full-length movie with multiple characters;

2. Then after "Voices" and "Place," which were both Sci-fi and dealt with grand issues, came "5cm" which was not Sci-fi and, except for the rocket, did not deal with any grand issues.

It seems like with each new anime, he takes an unexpected turn. So I guess we can expect the unexpected with his next feature, something far different than any of the previous 3. He might return to sci-fi or take on some other genre like fantasy, mystery or horror. Personally, I think it will be some kind of period piece set in the past. He seems to like playing with alternate-history scenarios, so it could be a replay of an historic event but with a different outcome. Just my thoughts.

IsUa:- Regarding something resembling Blade Runner.....hell yeah, that could really work cosidering BR left us asking more questions and it could have really used a sequel, which many fans want....no me though.

But if....that's a big if, Shinkai want to tackle an strong suited urban sci-fi anime....let him go for it.

Be it one completely original or perhaps a spiritual sequel.

Spiritual Sequel......that has me thinking.

If you can't do a sequel to your film....or you don't want too...it's a way to go as well.

-----oh yeah, like the BR pics, brings back some memories. Makes me want to whip out all 5 versions and bootlegs an watch it all over again.

Shinkai:- That's a fascinating statement about that species of plant.
I've heard of plants that bloom it's flower once every 100 years. Do you by chance remember the species which you referred?

But you do bring up a valid point......

There have been films and anime about alternate realities, mecha and so on fort....so much to name.

But there hasn't been much about Agriculture.....the life of plants that carries on throughout this world and perhapse other worlds.

The Spirit of the earth.

The Spirit of Worlds.

NB:- James Cameron has his film AVATAR coming out that deals with something along that line.

And as well...it also deals with the transference of human bodies and their memories into AVATARS.

Shinkai, might not want to be a copycat....but hey stories can evolve into something new and so can screenplays.

gleowine:- Patterns exist....and yes even Shinkai does this and it shows.

Patterns, just like rules.....should be broken and the end result should not mimic in any way whatsoever.

If he wants to return to sci-fi....hell....go right ahead, but push it to the limit of storytelling and animation.

Fantasy - That's sure to be somewhat new for him...and that genre expands alot this day and age.

Mystery - This is a excellent method of storytelling....perhapse, and I'm just throwing this idea out there after seeing "xcomp" review of the 5cm Novel and seeing the Agatha Christie Novel in the picture....."And Then There Were None" but with a change of twist.

Horror - Hmmmmmmm......Shinkai creating and out doing "The Grudge" in a anime form......it could work.

Period Piece - Well I said on GSD, that he should trying this using the code of the Bushido.

Not necessarily a alternate reality on ancient Japan (But that could work too) but a slide of hand as you will, a play of history.

Regarding the samurai class.....and throw in some romance.....maybe a forbidden romance between a princess and a samurai warrior during a age of war.

I can see the tagline on the posters.

"Bound By Honour & Love. In A Time Of War".

.......no I'm losing myself here, lol.

You all have so much that you think of saying.....and I want you all to say as much as the ideas just come to all.

In the end, we're going to have to take some time and watch the future project.

So why not put our expectations to share with friends.

Whatever next Shinkai animation feature, I still can't forget one thing about it: Distance.
