All,

I do seem to do my best thinking in airport terminals and airplanes .. I guess since there are no distractions or things I could be doing other than thinking that I can focus ... anyway ... here are some ideas I've come up with.

1. How do people feel about a Shinkai-Con ? THis isn't going to attract 20K people ... but a few people might show up. Some other ideas are .. we could have organized events in different areas (US, Europe, Australia, etc.) so that folks could get together and we could link in to a central feed from those areas as well as individuals. Anyone know of any good software that will allow for sharing video feeds?

2. I think it would be cool if we had some musically inclined folks put on a concert of Tenmon's music ... or if there was a social period where people could meet and Tenmon's music was being played.

3. Cosplay Contest - I know there aren't crazy costumes in any of Shinkai's films ... but the idea of cosplaying as a Tarsian is always sitting in the back of my brain. I wonder how many people would recognize that at a Co Smile

4. Masquerade - Either in video or just audio, a contest where people read or act some of the "soliloquies" from Shinkai's films. It would be cool to hear peoples interpretations of these.

5. I'm going to start pinging ComixWave to see if I can arrange a audio/Video QA or even a taped message from Shinkai himself ... that itself would be a huge win.

Anyway ... I'm open to any ideas you guys have ...

Laz

I agree that we need some other events besides just watching Shinkai anime. The music idea sounds good, perhaps for breaks, unless we can get some musicians online to perform during certain periods.

The main problem I see with a "con" is that, from my limited experience (Zitch has more), this involves not just attendees enjoying the con, but workers behind the scenes keeping it running. It requires a lot of planning and making sure the right people are in the right places. With forum activity kind of low right now, I'm not sure we can get enough people involved. But, that's just my thinking.

The main thing about GSD 2009 that I liked were the contests, letting people show their creativity as inspired by Shinkai. Perhaps instead of a "con" maybe a "festival" type gathering. Some type of space could be setup on the web to host photo & art galleries, essays, fanfiction, etc. I wouldn't try to use the home page, since space there is limited, unless we can talk myfastforums into giving us some extra Mbytes.

As far as video streaming, Zitch might know of something. The main problem would availability of webcams for the different locations.

Agreed Gleo ....

If perhaps we could align the event with a release of a new film or even get Shinkai involved, that would lend itself to a bigger event. But that's probably a ways off. I'm expecting the forum will be in a bit of a lull until news of the next film comes out and then it will pick up again.

I think the coolest part of this years GSD was the ability for us all to get on Vent and communicate. If we could work video into the equation and mayb have some folks meet up in certain locations, that would be cool.

Anyway ... just thoughts.

Communication was the best thing about Shinkai Day in my opinion. Regardless of how, I just thought it was great getting all us Shinkai fans in one place at the same time to all discuss the films and the man himself.

On the con idea, personally, I think that the group of people willing to get involved is too small to make it really worth trying to organise it (plus being the shy type myself I probably wouldn't be up for travelling to try and meet some people for the central feed idea).

I think the general music idea is great. Whether it would be incorporated as a competition or even just a little display in between watching the movies, I'd love to see people getting involved musically. For a long time i've been thinking of doing something with a Tenmon composistion, whether my musical knowledge is up to the task is another matter though  Laughing

Cosplay ; I need to see some Kanae cosplays. Now.

The main things I'd like to see in Shinkai day 2010 are a continuation of the contests. I think this is what will really draw the people in. If we set up the competition a good while beforehand, giving people the chance to prepare entries, then we can get it advertised about in relevant places on the net. Also it'd be great if we could get onto ADV about maybe donating some Shinkai DVDs and such for prizes.

Also pushing advertisement will be the key I think. If we can get onto as many Anime news sites and forums advertising the event (and the competitions + prizes  Smile  ) it could attract a bit of a larger crowd. Even if they don't get involved in the whole real time communication maybe they'll come and chat on the forums and we'll get some new members.

Also, I think I speak for everyone when I say Zitch's commentary needs a triumphant return!

Good stuff Maltos.

I agree, Zitch's commentary is key.

I need to see if I can talk him into Coming to Otakon for a Shinkai Panel next year Smile

Lol

I might need to be fueled with alcohol again for best effectiveness...

UPDATE:

I'm still keeping an eye out for alternate ways to communicate.  I just wish Teamspeak would come out with version 3 if their software so we can have official Linux/Mac/Windows support, plus it might be easier to output the chat to a shoutcast radio output.  Now that I have a 50 Mbps fiber connection at the house, we have bandwidth to do this, just need the correct software support.

I have some other ideas with Vent, though this time we may have to rent our own servers.  You can have vent output into a shoutcast server, but it's done pretty indirectly (and I'll look into this on my main desktop).  Maybe we should look into scheduling a GSmD (Global Shinkai mini-Day?) sometime in October to test this stuff.

Since we're in the second year I'd like to us the end line from Voices of a Distant Star ... koko ni iru yo .... I am here ...

Also, I need to ping comixwave and Crunchy Roll again to see if we can get the same set up.

There were a lot of people last time asking about "She and Her Cat." Maybe when you talk to them, see if they will allow that to stream as well.

That's a good call ... maybe some of the smaller things he's done as well.

Thanks for the input Gleo.

I definately second this idea. I think it'd be nice to put some focus on his various short bits and pieces.
