In one of Makoto Shinkai's interviews I read that Haruki Murakami was a very big influence on him.
I deficiently see the influence but the way Murakami portrays his stories...
There on a different level. I say, keep an eye for his books, he's a genius.

Actually I don't see the influence except for some stuff from Wind-up bird chronicles in Cat/Beyond the Clouds, can you point out some stuff?
Obviously Haibane Renmei was based on Hard-boiled Wonderland, which made me lose a lot of respect for HR.
Murakami isn't a bad author, but all his books are similar, and probably about himself.
