Shinkai often gets dubbed as "the next Miyazaki".

The only Miyazaki I've seen in Howl's Moving Castle and when I saw Voices (my first Shinkai), I got the same feeling of surprise that I got from Howl that I could be moved and mentally stimulated by an animation, especially foreign - as, in my naivety, I thought would be a cultural barrier, stopping me from fully understanding the intent of the director.

So, what do you guys think? How do think Shinkai's works compare with Miyazaki's? Good/bad in similar/different ways?

I've only seen Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky. The animation styles seem quite different, but that's probably due more to technique. Miyazaki seems to focus on the save-the-planet message, while Shinkai seems more focused on people and their relationships with one another. If there is anything they have in common, I think it has more to do with both being originals, each having his own unique style that stands out from all rest.

Hmmm ... I've seen Howls, Princess Mononoke, Nausicca, Kiki's Delivery Service, Totoro, Spirited Away and I liked them all.

This is going to sound bad, but I get more of a Family/Disney feel from Miyazaki's works than I do from Shinkai. Miyazaki's protagonists are mainly young girls/women who grow up or mature through the course of the film. The art work is beautiful. Definitely not as realistic a feeling as Shinkai, but beautiful. My favorites are Nausicaa and Totoro.

I think both Miyazaki and Shinkai are good at reaching into the viewer and making an emotional connection. Their characters are the everyman/everywoman that we can all relate to. They're both wonderful storytellers.

Just my opinion of course. Smile

The films I've seen by Miyazaki are Laputa: Castle in the Sky, Howl's Moving Castle and Totoro. They were all good and well planned.

Though Grave of the Fireflies was by Isao Takahata, I really enjoyed it even more than of Miyazaki's.

Yeah I've heard Grave of the Fireflies is like the saddest movie ever made.

Yeah ...I definitely want to see Grave of the Fireflys ... but everything I've read most people can't watch the whole thing .. its so sad Sad

It definitely is very sad.

What do you mean most people can't watch the whole thing? I don't want to ruin anything but after watching the entire film it would be very difficult to not have leaked a tear.

A must-see Laz, seriously.

I think he means it's so sad that most people can't finish it.

I only got really choked up at the end. And at the end I got really choked up. ;_;

On topic: Personally, I don't think Miyazaki and Shinkai are alike at all. If you look really hard you can probably find similarities, but if you look hard enough you can probably find similarities between any two things. :p

I'd just read a few reviews from people and a bunch of them had said that they had a hard time watching the whole thing as it was so sad. Some had said it was too sad to watch all the way through.
