Finally finishing watching Th Place Promised ... tonight ... there areall kinds of interesting little bits and pieces in this movie.
1. The cat is named Chobi ... yet another Chobi reference
2. Lots of misspellings like "pararel" rather than parallel and the mix up of Bela Ciela an Vela Ciela.
3. Hiroki's flight to the tower with Sayuri seems to be taking place on March 3rd or march of 03. The Vela Ciela Nav Program shows the following ...
"Velaciela Navigation Program 4.6b-512 --Mar.03"
I know that March 4th was the anniversary of Takaki and Akari's first meeting. Shinkai must like the month of March a lot Perhaps thats when the cherry blossoms bloom?
Anyway ... just thought that date was interesting. .. Back to the movie

| Maybe because the Japanese pronounce English words a little different with their accent. |

The "Bela Ciela"/"Vela Ciela" thing had me confused for a while. I was never sure what their ship was really called. I'm guessing the person that subbed it wasn't especially professional. Sort of like how in the Voices of a Distant Star booklet, the guy kept on putting "(or something)" after his comments.
On a different note, I'm kind of curious about the very beginning. It shows Hiroki on that train and near the workshop place, apparently reminiscing about Sayuri. I wonder what that was all about. |

The bela Ciela and Vela Ciela goes beyond the movie ... the info that comes along with the DVDs has it both way as well. Anyway .. just one of those little things that you notice.
The last time I watched I really tried to pay attention to exactly where in the story the opening scene, of Hiroki having flashbacks of Sayuri. I believe that that scene is really the middle of the movie. It's been 3 years since Sayuri has disappeared and Hiroki is getting the motivation to finish the plane. |

Actually, if I'm remembering correctly, the tower is gone in the opening scene. Hence it takes place after the end of the movie.
Might have to check again. Not that watching another Shinkai movie is all that disagreeable to me... |

I watched this over the weekend and noticed a few things I hadn't noticed before. They may seem trivial, but here goes:
1) Hiroki's narrative during the early years is being spoken from the time he returned to finish the Velaciela. I could tell this from the scene before "3 years later," where he says that that was the last time they'd seen Sayuri. The last shot shows the desk in the abandoned station with Horoki's things scattered on it. The things are still on the desk during the scene when he and Takuya return to the station and begin arguing about Sayuri and the Tower.
2) Maki spoke about the "dreams of the universe," something which appealed to Okabe and the others. At the end of the scene in Tokyo with Okabe, Tomisawa also expressed a desire to see those dreams. However, In the very next scene, Sayuri gives an actual description, since she herself is actually experiencing those "dreams," and they aren't very pleasant at all. I think what she was experiencing was an alternate future where the tower became active and destroyed the world. That future was erased, however, by the execution of Hiroki and Takuya's plan to save Sayuri and destroy the tower.
3) During the last dream scene with Sayuri in the classroom, Hiroki makes the excuse of having forgotten something. That "something" is a copy of a publication called "AIR" that shows a picture of an airplane on the cover. Just the sort of reading material for someone planning to fly a plane, don't ya think? |

Hmmm .. did anyone notice this ...
After Takuya and Hiroki have their fight (Takuya pulls gun on Hiroki) ... Hiroki has a scene where he sees Sayuri in a class room and she asks if he's had a fight. The next scene is Takuya getting treated by Maki.
Is Hiroki's scene a dream he has right after the fight? I think it is ...
