Hi folks,
Anyone in the US (or from anywhere else for that matter) going to Otakon ? I'm headed to all three days .... I'll be sure to take pics and look for any Shinkai goodies
If you're going, let me know.
Laz

Good news ... The schedule for Otakon is out and they are showing "The Place Promised ..." on Friday and "The Girl who Lept Through Time" on Saturday.
I'll keep a look out for items in the Dealers room.

Wow, that is quite a choice there Laz. 5CM or TGWLTT. Luckily I have both on DVD so I can watch it whenever I like.
If I were going (sadly impossible), I would probably pick 5CM as I would mostly want to see other people's reactions to the work of Shinkai. TGWLTT is awesome but 5CM cannot be missed, especially when others will be there also.
I see there will be famous guests also.

I'd pick 5cm per second too, but it's your choice in the end, Laz. I'm just frustrated that there are no such events in my country, why don't they respect us anime-fascinated people?... >_< _________________ Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. |

Yes ... this is a difficult choice
Actually ... it was at Otakon that I saw 5 CM Per Second for the first time and that was a life altering event ... as it spurred me on to put this board together and seek other Shinkai fans out and spend cash on Shinkai related stuff. I want to see TGWLTT since there were such good reviews of it here and I haven't seen it released over here yet.
What I really wanted to do .. and maybe I shoot for this next year is to try to get Shinkai to come to Otakon and have a panel discussion on is works .... kind of like what happened in London recently. I guess I'll need to start making those connections with the Otakon folks now.
For folks in places that don't have anime conventions or events ... have you put any thought into organizing one yourselves or at least starting a club up in your areas ? I was motivated to start up an anime club here in my town and though it's a bit of work scheduling events and organizing, it has ben fun to meet new folks and make new friends , just like on the forums here.
Anyway ... I guess that's the next level of fandom ... being active in your fandom ... with clubs or whatever.

I have this idea of starting up a "Comic/Manga" club at my post secondary school next year. Or at least looking into such a thing, think it's a great idea and I don't think there's such a thing yet. _________________ You know your old when, you reapeat things... you repeat things... you repeat things. |

Believe me, it ALWAYS work and is much better to have others who are interested in what you are. Also, your chances of starting any sort of club will increase dramatically.
If only I go to the same school as you or you in mine, hah hah! |

This is going to take me a while. I had a blast. My only regret was that there was so much I had still wanted to see that I just didn't have enough time for.
Here's a link to Otakon ... http://www.otakon.com/default2.asp
Friday afternoon I headed to the event and after a long pre-registration line ...I got in
I sat in on the first two episodes of MushiShi - I liked it ... very artsy, had a unique feel to it ... almost a pace like a Shinkai film.
I then met up with a girl who does an anime based PodCast. We met in the "Otacafe" where they had anime kareoke.
I then went to go and see "A Place Promised ...". The room was decent sized ... the screen was maybe a little bigger than an average projector would use. The room was maybe one third full ... I'd guess maybe 100 people. It was weird ... but it felt like the transition between the scenes were very long. Not sure if that is just normal .. I'll have to check out my DVD copy to see if it's the same. Of course I loved the film The audience was quiet and attentive. They laughed at a few appropriate times (when Hiroki and Takuya talk over each other answering about why they wanted 2 engines on the plane, etc.). People didn't clap at the end ... but a I walked out I noticed there was a girl in the back who was wiping tears from her eyes. I thought .. she gets it
I then went to a Naruto Panel which was fun ... they had a great presentation.
I then made my way to see JAM Project. I wasn't sure what to expect bt I'm glad I went. One of the performers was the person who played guitar and sang for the Nekki Basara character from Macross 7. I am a huge Macross fan so I was really happy when they played a Macross 7 song.
To top it off, I took my friend along to see the first 4 episodes of Macross 7.
Not a bad Friday night _________________ You're a woman, I'm a calf ... you're a window, I'm a knife ... we come together making chance into starlight ... - Jeff Buckley
