Here's one that would be rather timely:
THE KNIGHTS TEMPLAR by Stephen Howarth
It details the history behind the Crusades of the medieval period, how those in power were able to mobilize tens of thousands of people from Europe to invade what is today the Middle East (they didn't learn their lesson too well back then, either, compared to today).
Another one, though it might be a bit deep reading:
ON POWER: THE NATURAL HISTORY OF ITS GROWTH by Bertrand de Jouvenel
Explores the history of political power through the ages, how it was used and misused, and how individual liberty got trampled in the process (and is still getting trampled). |
