I havnt watched any of Shinkai's stuff since Shinkay Day actually!
I'm planning on watching Place Promised again soon. I aim to try and understand more of this film. One watching at a time
Also I may rewatch Cosmonaut again soon if I EVER get round to starting my Kanae AMV! _________________ "...Kanae fanboys represent!" - Zitch |

This seems like a good thread to add to
I watched The Girl Who Leapt Through Time tonight and I don't think it had the kind of impact the second time, as it did the first time.
Anyway ... I've thrown in my BlueRay version (no sub no dub) of 5 CM. Even though I don't know Japanese all that well, it's like stepping into a pair of your favorite slippers.
The trains make me think back to my time in Japan. Especially the street car rides in Hiroshima. The person I was traveling with would fall asleep on the street car ... very kawaii
Love the lens flare in the films ...
Though I find the first two chapters more visually stunning ...I still love the third. I know I'm in the minority on that one ... but personally I'm so far away from the first two parts that the third is at least the freshest to me. To some degree I struggle with some of the same issues that Takaki deals with. The more I watch this episode, the more I feel that Takaki will be ok.
As I said at the start of this post ... this film is like an old friend or a warm blanket on a cold day. It always seems fresh and I always find something new.
*** I checked and March 5th/6th would be next years Fri/Sat GSD. I may go ahead and set the counter up for that now and reach out to CR and ComiXWave again. _________________ You're a woman, I'm a calf ... you're a window, I'm a knife ... we come together making chance into starlight ... - Jeff Buckley

I'm right there with you Laz, the third ep is also my favourite, though the first one rivals with it pretty toughly. Anyway, I find the third episode to be the most emotional of them all, though once again the first rivals with it.
Anyway, I havent watched any of Shinkai's films in a while, and I really feel like I should. Though currently the urge to rewatch Eva has become far more imperative. |

Wah... quite rare to see anyone who prefers third chapter rather than the first two...
Maybe the character development was not satisfactory, which I think it may be intended to be... but how Makoto Shinkai compacted a person's life, feelings, and despair in just mere 5 - 7 minutes I think... is what makes it beautiful...
The best AMV I've ever watched is the byousoku ending... in close second is Momentum, based on byousoku also, if you've heard of it...:p _________________ "Sekai wa utsukushiku nanka nai. Soshite sore yueni utsukushii" |

I watched 5 cm per second again last night, and I have to say I was absolutely floored at the level of attention to detail.
A few humorous items I stumbled across in the film on my rewatch:
The coffee shop at the station terminal is called "Starberk's"
A magazine in the convenience store Takaki visits is advertising "Windows Vasta" |

I find it interesting that we are more attentive when staring at a 3 inch screen of a portable DVD player. Watching 5cm like I did for subtle details wouldn't be such a great idea though. It would probably be like searching for Wally on your cell phone screen.

Here's something that I hadn't picked up on before ... at the start of the third episode, Takaki walks by the tree that he and Akari had passed by at the beginning of the first episode and he smiles. I know it's subtle, but Takaki spends most of the second and third sections being kind of emotionless ... so this brief show of emotion, which when connected to the chance meeting at the train tracks, brings the movie full circle and really makes me feel even more that Takaki has turned the corner in his life.
Anyway ... just my thoughts on a re-watch
