When I first heard about this title years ago, I was pretty skeptical of it for a couple of reasons:

a)  How do you take a 40-page English play and turn it into a 24-episode Japanese anime?

b) It was being produced by GONZO studios, who were notorious for starting an anime strong, but letting their stories whither and fall apart at the end (This was before I saw Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, another highly recommended title, but I digress).  And I was afraid they were going to put mecha in this one too (Like they did in Samurai 7 and the earlier mentioned Gankutsuou...).

So I ended up not watching the fansubs for this series, which turned out to be a good thing, which I'll explain later...

So, last week, the girlfriend and I were in Best Buy looking for a new washing machine when we decided to go through their (shrinking) anime section when we find both box sets for Romeo x Juliet.  She wanted to see it, so we picked it up and started watching it at home...

And my expectations were blown out of the water.  I mean, the story itself was changed in a few interesting ways (and though it's been at least a decade since I've read the original Romeo and Juliet I do remember the basic themes):

a) The whole thing takes place in a fantasy world in a city named "Neo-Verona" that is set on a floating aerial continent rather than the original setting of Verona, Italy.

b) Instead of being equal-strength opposing factions in the original play, the Capulets were the original rulers of Neo-Verona when they were slaughtered in a takeover by Leontes Montague; Juliet, at age two, was the only one to escape.  The whole story takes place 14 years later.  So the whole plot brings in themes of revenge and justice in addition to the tragic love between the main couple.

c) The main couple's roles were largely reversed.  Juliet became "Action Girl"; because of the slaughter of her family and she was being hunted by Lord Montague, she was raised to show herself to the public as a boy, and was taught sword fighting.  Romeo was a soft-hearted soul who was betrothed; his animosity towards his tyrannical father increases as the series goes along.

d) Because the series is stretched out over 24 episodes, it can take its time to develop the romance between the two leads, which I find to be much more effective than the original play.

As you can see, Shakespeare purists should probably avoid this series.  Yet, I would recommend it for others, just keep in mind it's "loosely" based on his play.

Of big notice, why I said it was probably good I skipped the subs, was the English Dubbing.  The writers and the voice actors attempted to maintain the Shakespearean style of speech, down to having parts of episodes in iambic pentameter.  And they somehow succeed; this style of speech is just impossible for the original Japanese, so I understood they played it straight (except for quoting several lines in English); fortunately, FUNimation decided to go for this style and it works quite surprisingly well (and keep in mind, they still had to match the mouth flaps!  ADR work isn't easy...).

Secondly, the background music was just fantastic!  It was composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto, but the group that performed it might be recognizable: the Eminence Symphony Orchestra.  Yes, the same Eminence Symphony Orchestra that performed for the "Promise" CD.

Overall, I recommend the series for those look for a good romance with a bit of action.  The first half is just excellent; unfortunately, it stumbled in the second half, but it still finishes strong.  The series does nicely re-create several scenes from the play and references other Shakespeare plays.  But the one scene that came to mind is the "first kiss" scene which I don't think came out of the original play; this scene in episode 7 is perhaps the best kiss scene I've seen in all of anime, maybe one of the best in all media that I've seen or read.

So, yeah, I liked it... Smile

Just had a thought: we can now link Makoto Shinkai to William Shakespeare.  How long will it be before we start playing "Six Degrees from Makoto Shinkai"?  Wink
