2008/12/01

As the last mouth of this year comes, London is becoming colder and colder. I think it must be very cold in Tokyo at night in this season; but in London, the daytime is as cold as night. To protect myself from winter’s coldness, I bought thick sweaters and coats, but I still feel cold.
I accepted an invitation to have a speech at a girl's school, James Allen's Girls' School, which located in London in December 18, and I paid a visit to the school a few days ago. When I saw the girls in school uniform are everywhere, I just feel it was strange for me to stay there, and I feel very nervous when I had lunch at school café. I also visited Japanese class. The teacher was a Japanese young man (he arranged the speech), and the students were twelfth grade (third grade in high school) who will spend 4 years to study Japanese. I always believe it is very difficult for a student whose mother tongue is English to learn Japanese. So when I saw they read and wrote Japanese characters fluently, I felt a little surprised. I took the character test with the students and I picked up「急がしい」when I should write「忙しい」(Oh, what a shame…) , but the girl beside me got the right answer (Note: he wanted to say he made a mistake in a Japanese test. I don't know if my translation is clear. By the way, the word means busy). Ha ha ha, I just laugh at myself.
The Japanese Grammar class was also interesting. “可能動詞”(Note: sorry, I don’t know how to translate it. This is a form of Japanese verb, which means it is possible or able to do something) which I learned in middle school as a part of use of verb, now is taught as potential form (of verb) . The modal verb plays the same role in English. The distinct differences of grammar just illustrate the big difference between our language’s structures. Only look at the Japanese verb, you will know how complicated Japanese is (compared with English) .
Let’s turn to another topic. I often hear some funny rumors. Such as, “Shinkai is not abroad, and he is living in Atami (Note:Atami, somewhere in Japan)” “Shinkai got married in London”. I think they are funny. Of course, none of them is true.

No useful information about new work...a little disappointed.

Do we have any Londoners here? Anyone have a possibility go to the speech? It will begin at 4 p.m December 18, 2008. And the location is  James Allen's Girls' School. Some information can be found here http://www.jags.org.uk/jags/, the website of the school.

I am envy of the girls. Wish they will have a good time with Shinkai! Very Happy
Maybe Shinkai will show us some details about speech in next update..

Oh no no, I meant that the idea of him getting married in London made me giggle, not the mistake in the text.

Again thank you Kzoue for posting these. I feel so happy just by simply seeing a new update related to Shinkai.

Any idea what the speech is about?

About the speech, Shinkai posted an announce on his homepage. As he said, he will show 5cm/s in the speech, and introduce something about anime making, then answer questions.
He also said this is a special speech which is ONLY for the students and their parents. Oh Sad

December 28, 2008

The end of this year is coming soon. As English don't pay much attention to it, I didn't get much special feeling about the end of the year. Every day passed as usual.

Let me talk about something about the special speech at James Allen's Girls' School on December 18. The photo on the left is the girls of Japanese language class who sang One more time, One more chance before we began to watch 5 cm per second. The Japanese teacher played the piano and the girls presented us a very beautiful song. And I think this is the highlight of the whole speech (laugh). Of course they sang in Japanese; however when the lyric came to “One more time…” their voice became much more confident in a sudden, which makes them so cute (laugh). Everyone did a great job.

(1) I was speaking on the stage. The one in the middle is me. And Tim(on the right of me) is my interpreter. He is a very interesting guy. He decides to become a missionary, and he works as a magician as well as he has a job in a Japanese IT company, and he speaks two languages (his Japanese is Kanse accent). The man on the left of the photo is our producer who got himself there incidentally (?).

(2) A magnificent theatre. It seems to be used in the school’s opera performance. And the 5 cm per second was played with English subtitle.

(3) I used 5 cm per second and some other short works of mine as examples to explain how to make anime to the students from looking for scenes and sketch.

(4) In the end of speech, I asked some students to have a drawing show with me. It was the first time they touched pen tables, and they tried their best to draw. I think they find some joy in it.

(5) The signing event after speech. I found some students took my DVDs there. Most of the people who came to my events were male (98% is male…); but this time all of audiences were girls, which make me a little nervous. I think this will not happen again.

When the new year comes, it will be a whole year after I left Japan. Although I didn't expect any changes, I still feel surprise when I find the things I want to do and the things I treasure didn't change even a little. I am happy to understand that no matter where I go, my life will continue. I will stay here for a few more days.[/code]
