There are probably spoilers in here, if you haven't seen the movie.

I had originally types this big long description of each of the three episodes and I had the movie on in the back ground. One of the key questions I had after watching yesterday was ... is Takaki someone to be felt sorry for ? I the end, is he responsible for his circumstances or not ?

We see him as this timid guy who has a hard time expressing is feelings  (when Akari calls to tell him she's leaving, it takes him weeks to put a letter together). Even when he realizes his feelings or her ... he doesn't know what to do with them. Is he just someone that can't express love .. even though he appears to feel it?

In the second story, we see him appear to be sending text messages. We see him being oblivious to the new girl (Kanae) who obviously has strong feelings for him. We later learn that Takaki never sends those text messages to Akari. He feels strongly for her, but he doesn't appear to act on it.

In the final story we see that Takaki has grown pretty much numb ... he has buried himself in his job and can't sustain much a relationship with his recent GF. We see Akari heading to Tokyo to get married .. and we hope it's with Takaki. We see Takaki walk pass Akari at a train crossing and he hesitates and when he turns around, a train passes and when it is gone, Akari has left.

Is Takaki or his inability to express himself to blame for his state ? Is he happy at the end when he passes Akari ?

I tend to feel bad for Takaki but if he had just either expressed himself and put forth the effort to retain a relationship with Akari ...or moved beyond it ... he would have ben much better off. Really .. he seems to be the only character who doesn't seem to progress. If these three stories are about the passage of time ... we see Takaki as the only one who doesn't seem to be able to grow emotionally.

Anyway ... after watching this a few more times tonight .. I've got a few other things to post about.

What do you think ? Is Takaki a victim of his own inability to act ?

The world is very complicated, emotions in yourself are one of the most difficult to control I've learnt.

Sometimes the actions you make or not make, like what Takaki has shown, not only can effect you pausing your time going ahead in life, it can also affect other people.

--------------------------------------------

Oh, this is from the part in Part 1 when Takaki and Akari leaves each other. I couldn't resist to write down his words. This was one of the most sad moments of 5CM for me.

"In that moment,
In the dwelling place of eternity,
hearts and souls...
Became clear to me...
It was as if I understood everything that has happened in my life all these years...
And... the time which was to come
I became unbearably sad...

Akari's warmth, her spirit,
How should I treat them,
where should I bring them?
That was something I did not know.

That we could not be together forever after this.
Was a fact I clearly grasped...
The vast lives we had ahead of us,
the boundless amount of time that laid unavoidably stretched out in front of us.

But...
The anxieties which I had caught sight of,
soon melted away.

And after that, only Akari's tender lips remained.

That night,
we stayed in a small barn beside a field.
Sharing an old blanket,
we talked long into the night.
And before we knew it,
we had fallen asleep.

In the morning,
I watched the sun chase away the stars.
I can feel her warmth overcoming the coldness in my heart.

I boarded the train which had started again.

Akari and I parted.

Akari...
Akari, you too, be well!
We'll write letters... and telephone too!
I did not tell Akari...
That I had lost the letter which I had written to her.
From before to after that kiss...
It seemed as though everything in the world has changed.
I strongly wished for the strength to protect her.
Just thinking that, as always...
I continued watching the scenery outside the window..."

Thanks for transcribing that .... how sad.

It kind of bothers me that if this was Mikako and Noboru from Voices, they may have doubts but they rise above them ... while here, Takaki seems to give in to them. I guess I blame Takaki for the position he finds himself in at the end ... but that kind of communication is a two way street.

With a happy or sad ending ... the longing involved in each of these stories is  a sweet sadness.

Anyway ... thanks again!

P.S. Love your youTube profile ... tons of great Shinkai stuff.

i feel that it is partly takaki's fault. how ever i know that we all know how he felt. i am sure that at some point in life every one has had something that they wished to do a had a feeling they wanted to act Upon. but quite often your fear of rejection or your emotions stop you from taking action upon them.

I feel that that is what happened to takaki and i can under stand how that would happen. that being said he should have swallowed his nerves and kept in contact. but in that situation would you be able to. i have doubts about whether i would.

After watching this movie twice I wouldn't say it was Takaki's inability to act which was his fault, I find he showed the ability to act. I foundit to be more of his inability to let go. I think it more had to do with the circumstances at hand, I'm not sure what happens in between the first and second episode but that's what I love  about this movie.

Perhapse the circumstances at hand started to further the distance between there relationship. This caused unsettling emotions with in Takaki which stoped him form sending the messages maybe he wanted the sever there connection between each other.

But his fault lies in his inability to let go which seems to push him backwards.

Great point .... and regardless of whether he acted or not ... the real point of Takaki is that he hasn't let go like the other characters are able to.

Great Post Menasha Smile

To not let go usually causes pain within yourself. Not always good though but creating a sheer sweet feeling from the past memories which you cannot forget.

Just watched the 3rd part again and really tried to pay attention to Takaki and the meeting at the train crossing with Akari, and I really get the sense that Takaki can move on.

I started noticing the many times that cherry blossoms were falling in this part ... and then I thought back to how Takaki and Akari had made a promise or had said that they'd see the cherry blossoms all again. Through man of the clips in the montage, we see Takaki and Akari, separate, watching the cherry blossoms fall. At the Train crossing ... the cherry blossoms are falling, so they did keep that promise ... they did see them falling together again Smile

Yes, a promise like that, no matter what can not be broken. That is something I admire.

It's really a shame what Takaki put him self threw how ever, I feel he was stuck in a dream or fantasy vision of Akari from then on after that night they parted. If Akari never did send him a letter I think Takaki would have eventually forgotten about Akari. But he say's she seemed alone in her letters and he eventually wants to protect her from that point on.

What I still can't grasp at the moment is what happened in the second episode? He starts writing messages he never sends, but I still think it's possible from him to have contacted her. We see both of them looking the the mail boxes in the AMV at the end and it looks liek there both in high school at this point in time. So I feel lost there Very Happy

How ever just by judging from Takaki's smile at the end I'm glad he's moved on, or let go.

*Edit* Yes I'm glad they saw the cherry blossoms together at the end, but I'm also glad Akari disappeared. I don't think Takaki could have handled a conversation with her some how. Though I see a good possibility in the future that they will be friends again.
