I just got this in the mail today and finished the manga
SPOILER ALERT ... SPOILER ALERT ... SPOILER ALERT
My overall opinion was that I liked the manga version, maybe not as much as I like the film, but it was good. It had enough of the original story to retain the structure, it just added a lot of background about certain things (Mikako's life on the Lysithea, Noboru's life on earth). The ending was the same, generally ... it did not end with the same "I am here" impact, but was acceptable.
I did like the way that i came about that Mikako and Noboru were going to meet up again. I thought that was cleverly done and there is enough emotion in that discovery by Mikako, that it rang true to the original film.
I was a little worried before I read the manga because I had such high expectations based on the film. I wasn't disappointed and I think it enhances my understanding of the story and the characters a little.
Anyway ... if any one else has red or reads the manga, I'd love to hear your impressions.
I've been looking for a free one o the internet but no luck so far. i ordered it about 6 months ago from a book shop in perth but i have not heard back from them. good thing i opted to pay after they got the book in. If i get it i will post a scan. but don't get your hopes up
in first, I'm sorry for my orrible english, the manga it's arrived in italy, i buy it and and like it so much, in che manga they have been the possibility to insert more parts and caracters. and the "new" final is not so bad, mantaint the alineament of the anime
I liked that they didn't really change the over all flow of the film in the manga. I think the pieces that they did add didn't detract from the story. I like the end of the film a little better because it leaves more to the imagination ... but the manga kinda of went along with my mental image for the end of the story.
Welcome aboard!

I prefered the manga version. Even though nothing can beat Shinkais backgrounds, the art was very nice and i prefer the character art in the manga over the film.
That said, I only watched the film [or ova, whatever you want to call it] once and it didnt have the huge impact Shinkais other two ventures did, to me. I will watch it again now i have some spare time and hopefully appreciate it slightly more this time around.
I love both the movie and manga, except that I slightly tend to prefer the film because
Spoiler:
I think the sad ending is more believable. It seems like in the manga the creator was afraid to draw a heartbreaking end. I mean, the two meeting up again was a tad disappointing to me...
But still, the manga is one of the few that has made me feel chocked up. A shame it doesn't have many chapters, but it's worth reading. And the first pages are beautifully colored - here's a scan of the first page if anyone's interested.
