I have to say ... there are a few things that I've experienced in life that have moved me to do something. This movie is one of them.
I just watched the Sub (I usually watch the Dub) and I guess I kinda prefer the Dub, thought the Sub is excellent.
I really can't find anything wrong with this film. I have some friends who aren't all that crazy about the character design, but I really don't have any problem with it. I love the story telling technique and the depth of the characters is really something when you consider the length of the work. For a short film, it doesn't feel like a short film. It's such a complete story. Anyway ... I'm a huge fanboy so what else am I going to say
The music: Here is one of the things I really like about this film, there really isn't anything that overpowers another aspect of the film. The music adds to the drama of the story and the emotion of the characters.
The Characters: I like the fact that these characters express themselves, despite the time between emails. Mikako's longing for Noboru, expressed in her messages and Noboru's longing for Mikako as he deals with the distance and time. When Noboru finally makes up his mind to work towards a military assignment, so that he can see Mikako again. I just get the feeling that they will see each other and that things will work out between them. Also, Mikako is a bad-ass in her Tracer
The ending ... the summation of both of their longings is in the positive response to each other despite the distance "I am here". WOW.
Anyway ... I'm sure I'll have more to add when I watch the Dub again.
What did you like about this film?

The only thing that I don’t like about it is that it ends.
The main ingredient I think is the music, it does not have much impact if you watch it with out sound. That and I just love the songs.
If any one wants the sound track it can be found here

I agree ... the music adds a lot and it's the right amount ... it doesn't overpower the story or the images.
I bought a combined "Voices" and "Place Promised" and the Voices DVD came with the Sound track. It's great stuff.

I very much loved this short film.
I always watch the Subs, if it's any sort of Dub, I do not watch it. Yes, I am a pure Dub hater for all the reasons. |

| i like the sub more too. i like to listen to the voices as Makoto shinkai intended them to be. that being said it is a good dub even though some of the voices are too high. it lets you see more of the movie. which is alwase a good thing |

The thing I like about watching the Subs and the Dubs is identifying the slight differences and tone in what is being communicated in each.
I prefer the Subs too ... I feel that I get more of the emphasis/emotion from the original actors.
I do like the Dub to though

yes, I too own the Shinkai Collection Of Place promised and VOIDS <3... My favorite part about the box set BY FAR, is the pamphlets that came with it put together by shinkai and etc. with actual pictures and description of how everything was made. really amazing. |

I just watched Hoshi No Koe again tonight and wanted to go through all the thoughts and emotions used. The time and distance it takes for their mails to be sent especially the over 8 years from Sirius was really painful.
Once again, the ending had my eyes swarm with tears. I managed to translate the final words which I love. Very moving.
[Mikako]: "Say, Noboru-kun...
We are far, far, very, very far apart..."
[Noboru]: "...but it might be that thoughts can overcome time and distance."
[Mikako]: "Noboru-kun, have you ever thought about something like that?"
[Noboru]: "If...
If for even one instant, something like that could happen.
What would I think?
What would Mikako think?"
[Mikako]: "Say, there is probably one way we would think.
Say, Noboru-kun..."
[Both]: "I am here."
