What were your thoughts on this? I got the ADV release yesterday in the mail and watched it. I liked some of the changes in dialog from the subed version I watched, however many I felt were unnecessary and just took away from the story for me.

Overall, I just did not feel the story with the voice actors. Takaki needed that voice actor I felt, it just would not be the same with anyone else. There's something about his voice that I got a hidden pain from in Episode two and there just wasnt the correct touch to any of there voices.

A few small details I enjoyed but overall the story was lost. I felt nothing from it other then the backgrounds. I realize how important voice acting is, and how difficult it actually is to find the right people.

A few of the smaller characters I actually preferred.

All I can say is now I'm wanting to watch the English dub for myself so I can judge it...

Hopefully when I do, it won't be as bad as I'm thinking it will be.

I tend to prefer dubbed versions, but every now and then I'll turn on the Japanese audio with subs. I did that with 5 cm. I think the best dub was Kanae's in Story #2, though I can't remember the actress' name. It seemed to catch some of the same emotion and vulnerability, as well as that quiet determination that endeared her to me.

I agree with Kanea being dubbed well in english. Not sure why they changed her name to Serena. As well the season where you mentions "Please don't be so nice to me." It just did not build up properally.

From the snippets I have seen of the eng version, I would still say I prefer the japanese --- but again, I can't really form a proper opinion until I watch the whole film in english.

I tried my best to watch it but it was impossible.
Takaki is not the same if its not Japanese. It has something in his voice that the English voice has not, but it goes deep in your heart and you can't forget it.
This to show that not only the movie has great animation but great voice casting as well.

That's a great point that I don't think we talk about much ... we talk about Dub vs. Sub ... but not the quality of the Japanese voice actors. Rarely do you find the depth of emotion in the ENglish Dub than you do in the original Japanese. Anyway .. just my opinion.

Exactly I remember watching 5CM when making portuguese subs, when saw the japonese raw, was... Shocked (the scene when Akari phone to Takaki, and starts to cry, you feel the pain....)
For me, Takaki is good but Akari voice in the original is just Amazing Very Happy
Everybody should try, to see this film in the original...is worth Very Happy

I agree the original voice actors are amazing. They didn't just tell the story, they showed us.

But I have to point out it's not just this film but many other anime have truly great voice actors who also have this talent.
