If you had a Death Note...

... what would you do?
I'm pretty sure all of us know what a DN is, but what would you really do with it if it came in your possession one day?

I'm sure I'd turn into selfish mode and 'take care' of the people that have hurt me in life and then maybe I'd kill a few criminals. My psychology teacher said that any man than possesses power will turn evil, so I'm curious if the next posts here will prove him wrong  Wink
Phantast

I've never watched Death Note, so I only know a little bit. It's a book, you write a name in it and the person with that name dies, right?

I'd burn it, so I (or anyone else) wouldn't end up abusing it. No one can track the death down to you, right? So I'd say the risk of keeping it and ending up murdering someone is too high. And it's not like I'd be any worse off than before I had it...
Fripod

Well, I'd say that if we've learnt anything from the Shinkai films, it is that life is beautiful (even if it is beautifully sad most of the time) and that really such an object as a DN would just be destroying so much, whilst acheiving practically nothing.

So yeah, I think i'd get rid of it too.
Maltos

Though i know it'd be wrong and what not, i'm probably just about crazy enough to go on a little killing spree. But like Light, i'd only kill people who i felt deserve it. And it wouldnt be criminals and the like. Things more close to home. I would ask for shinigami eyes and i'd probably carry it out punishment over a series of time.

What happens next depends on whether i've got enough of a conscious not to let the power make me completely insane. I'd like to think i'd be able to destroy it though.

Almost the same words I was going to use. . . although, there are a few politicians. . . .  Twisted Evil
Janny

Wow, you guys have so much good in you! Great to see that there are still people out there that can't be changed even if offered unimaginable power.
Laz

Hmmmm ... good question. I'd probably not do anything with it or give it back to the shinigami. Having a DN is kinda like getting wishes or time travel ... you're just asking for trouble.
Nick

I've only watched Death Note a couple of times, and I've always wondered. What the hell are those weird monster things that hang around some of the characters???

If I had a death note? I'd use it as blackmail by threatening to write people's names in it to get anything I wanted, then I'd go crazy with paranoia thinking people would try to steal it in my sleep, so I'd move into some crumbling old lighthouse on the edge of a tiny rocky outcrop in the middle of the ocean where I live off desalinised sea water, any fish I can catch, and the flesh of shipwrecked sailors!!

Thoughts?
Laz

You are a twisted man .. ha ha ha ha ha ...

Laz
Junpei

Hmm, I can sense a topic such as this can be a big discussion.

Nick, thank you for making me laugh. You are a sweet cruel man. Smile

I agree with Laz though, having control over such power is just asking for trouble. However, owning something like a Death Note would obviously make a man happy at first thought but as you go on you'll probably realise you cannot stop commiting murder after everything you would have done. Which means the only things that will happen is either continue killing, or until someone stops you. But you would not want to let that happen, so you'll work even harder in killing those who get in your way.

I think, like most others, we are better off without such madness of fantasy into reality. But then, we are all living precious lives and that could be a fantasy itself!
Phantast

Nick: Crumbling old lighthouses = awesome. (Blackmail and sailor flesh, not so much. Laughing )

Junpei: I don't think I'd be happy to have a Death Note. In fact, I'd probably panic and get stressed out and paranoid about it. Until I remembered the fire-place. :p

Unrelated: Having a Death Note seems like having a gun and a fool-proof alibi. But just because you can kill someone without fear of retribution, doesn't mean everyone will.
Junpei

Yes I see, but I meant having the Death Note would make a person "happy" or excited in even the smallest bit some way knowing you have control over such power.

I just remembered from the anime, Death Notes cannot be burnt by fire, hmmm...
Phantast

I think I understand what you're saying now.

About DN's not being able to be burned: Ha ha, they wouldn't make it that easy, would they? xD

In the end, I think (or at least I hope) I would get rid of the Death Note instead of using it. Bury it or something.
Menasha

Oh my so much power in my little hands... what would I do with it. Hide it, then perhapse use it someday when I finally convinced my self it was jusified :3
Junpei

Don't know if it's just me but I think there is no justification whatsoever to having such power, especially for yourself.

My final line is why should we have the power to kill out lives? Every single life lost is every single memory lost. If someone wanted to die, that is their own choice, not ours.
Phantast

I think the other side to that is, what if something happened and by killing one person you could save other, innocent people? Like, what if there was a serial killer running on the loose murdering people, and the police couldn't catch him? (That happened in a city in Arizona not too long ago, I believe.) Or what if there was a dictator that was killing people by the hundreds?

(Edit: Tens of thousands? Wow, that's a lot of people. :O )
Janny

^ Who could say no to that? I know that every life is precious, but still... Saving thousands of innocent people or sparing the life of a criminal? It's hard to pick the latter.
Menasha

Junpie, right now I couldnt see justification but I think our minds are a little weak in a way. Haveing such power, I feel would at last force me to reconize I have this power, and think about this power. -I do alot of thinking-

Maybe in a way I would go insane?  Idk.. just a thought.
Menasha

To add onto what Phantast said -cool to see you back Phantast!-

Picture this lets say you end up do killing such a criminal. Your mind would start to ease the justification into killing others? I say this because a death note in a way makes it an extremly "convenient" way of killing someone.

One little tip I read from someone was if you want to draw "Make it as convenient for you as you can to draw" This will in turn kind of nudge you to draw since, it's so "convenient".

It's kind of like "I can kill people so "conveniently" why not?" As cruel as that sounds hehe..
Nick

It's like when I feel like playing some music - my guitar is always sitting there, completely ready to go - nothing to set up, whereas my saxophone is in the case - disassembled. I know which one I, without fail, will pick up.

Hmm... not sure where I'm going with this. Convenience - that's it!
Menasha

Mmmhmmm is see where your going with it Very Happy
Laz

I guess since you're never able to see all the impacts that such a decision would make, you can never tell ... other than the immediate action, if it was good or bad. You could do one thing that could change the course of history in the long run for better or worse.

The only thing I ever feel I need to change the most is myself. That's the only thing I have control over Smile

Laz
Junpei

I see what you mean but I still don't feel right killing a human being no matter what reasons. I don't really believe in "justice" either. Every man has his/her own perspective on what is "right" or "wrong" for them.
Menasha

Haha I remeber one of my teachers saying this about justice. "Justice is only really what the people with power say it is" It's a word that so vauge it doesnt really exist I guess =P You can definently get the sense of justice though.
Phantast

I think there are some things that are definitely right and some things that are definitely wrong. (Incidentally, I also think that justice is real. That is, I think that certain actions deserve certain consequences.)
Janny

Then I assume you haven't played Hitman :p

Even though I know the term of "justice" has kind of lost it's value, I can't help but think that the police represents justice - maybe I just want to be sure that there are people out there ready to back up us citizens...
Nick

You guys would have loved Society and Culture - this subject I do at school. Actually I have my trial exam for it tomorrow.

We deal with (amongst a whole bunch of other stuff) power and authority, social inequality and justice, etc.

It's a pretty good subject but the Personal Interest Project almost killed me.
Menasha

Your right I think I would have loved it.

Good point Janny.
Junpei

I don't know... I'm not into discussing that kind of thing.
the_emh

if i had a death note i would kill the original creators of the series / anime because i think that show is the most over rated thing i have seen in the past few years.

so the note cannot be burnt by fire hay?? in that case i would tie a lump of lead onto it. get a boat to the middle of the indian ocean and toss it in. that or attach it to a bomb at an atomic testing range... lets see how a little book likes THAT Razz

on a more serious note.
I would not kill anyone, i believe that no matter how horrible / twisted a person is they are alive for a reason and have a roll to play in this world. i would take time to think of the most fool proof way in which to dispose of it to ensure that it was 100% unrecoverable so that no one could use it.
Fiction

If I had such a thing, I'm not entirely sure.  I have no one that I'd want taken care of.  If there's someone that crosses me, I deal with them myself.  With each thing that comes across, I make a point of doing things myself.  To rely on a book to do that is kind of foolish.  To hide it away somewhere, I'd set it inbetween my ever-growing library.  Each year it grows by 60-120 books, so it'll be bound to be lost somewhere.
