Welcome to Cherry Blossoms Falling ...

Hi,

I just got done watching 5 CM per Seconds and I went online to look to see if there were any fan sites for Makoto Shinkai. I knew there is one based in Japan by Daike (http://daike.hp.infoseek.co.jp/index.html) and that the Forums there are closed. I found several reviews about 5 CM per Second, but I couldn't find an English Fan Site. So ... ta da ... I created one.

How I got interested in the works of Shinkai:
I walked into a screening of 5 CM per Second at Otakon and had no clue what it was that I was watching but I was blown away by the visuals and the story telling. At the end ... I had to learn more about Makoto Shinkai and definitely get whatever he had created. I have since purchased all the films and I haven't been disappointed by any of them.

Anyway ... I figured I'd throw this board together to see if there were other people out there that love these works of art as much as I do. I hope so.

For those of you that have been looking for a place to discuss the works of Shinkai, "I am here" Smile

Hia.
Great to see that there is finally a dedicated English forum site.

My first experience of Makoto Shinkaiís works was about 18 months ago when I went looking for sci-fi anime at JB hi-fi. Up until then I had never really been interested in mecha anime and so the cover put me off a bit. But dew to the lack of other movies I read the blurb and found it to be nothing like what I was expecting, and that is sounded different to almost any anime I had seen up to that point. I bought the DVD and watched it as soon as I got home.

I loved every bit of it and the end made me cry. Except for the character animation it was the most beautiful movie I had ever watched and is now my favourite movie ever. I then went on the internet and found to find other works by him. I was ecstatic to find the full feature length Kumo no Mukou (far beyond the clouds) and as the following day was Sunday and so shops where closed I downloaded it because I could not wait.

On Monday I went and bought two copies of Kumo no Mukou and another of voices.

About this time last year info about Byousuko 5cm was released along with the first third of the movie. I felt at first that it was lacking somewhat, but decided that this was probably because only seeing one third of the movie.

When it finally came out in cinemas I checked torrent sites daily for it. But it was not until the DVD was released (about 3 months later) that anywhere uploaded and then I had to wait about a week for someone to sub it. When I finally got to watch it I was as blown away as when I saw voices for the first time. Until I saw the ending. I felt that the ending was grossly miscalculated. However upon watching it again I felt more comfortable with it and now I feel that to end it any other way would have spoilt the movie.

Well there are my thoughts in so many words. What are everyone elseís.
Gregasus

My first encounter with mr Shinkai's work was a year or two after voices when I happend to see the US trailer wich gave me a totaly wrong image of the movie.
And when I picked it up some time later my first impression was 'Is that it?' but after doing some more research on mr Shinkai I got a beter understanding of it and I was so blow away the second time I watched it I went and watched it a third and fourth time the same day.

And so I became the only(to my knowledge) Belgian fan of mr Shinkai's work, and so far I never met anyone in my country who knowed or liked it.

His work has also been an inspirement in my line of studie.(Grafical webdesign)
Laz

Welcome to the site guys.

You do not know how happy I am that some other people joined this site Smile I was almost going to start a conversation with myself on here.

I've been watching a lot of my other love (Macross/Robotech) but will probably throw in Voices tonight and have a bunch to post.

Thanks,
Laz

Hi everyone, this is Velaciela and I'm a French fan of Shinkai's works Wink

This is really a good idea, the creation of this forum, I didn't find any on Makoto Shinkai Works, thanks to you.

I don't write in english very often but I count on your cooperation Twisted Evil  (I doubt I will write long text anyway)

Well see ya^^

Hi everyone!

Iím from Hungary, a little country in Central Europe with an anime community riseing with the speed of light. My english knowledge is limited, so i appologize if i will write abstruse sentences.

Great to see that an english based Shinkai Makoto forum is existing. Itís very important to spread the world of the sensei. Many thanks to you, Laz.

The first work of Shinkai-sensei i attended was Beyond the Clouds approx. 3 years ago. This is my all time favorite Shinkai film. After reading a review and eyeing some screenshots in a hungarian anime site, i got interested, and soon i watched this wonder. Well, words donít come easy to express the influence. It touched my heart, brought me to tears, when i first heard that miracoulos violin solo i felt creepy. There was nothing before this film that made me so spellbound, i have never been in this state of mind. Iím a typical heroic-romantic type, i fully understand and admire those things. True love conquers time and distance, moreover it can bridge dimension, how a beautiful and precious thought. I started wanting to know everything about the creator, i became a Shinkai Makoto fan.

I attended all the works of Shinkai Makoto one after the other, and all of them caused a more or less similar impression. Byousoku 5cm was a bit deception for me, i hoped and wished so much that Akari and Takaki will be together again. Even so i love this, too. I will write about the concrete works in their topics.

A short time ago i ordered all the works of Shinkai-sensei in original japanese edition from Japan, i have the Byousoku 5cm Limited Edition Package with the signature of the sensei, i am very happy becaouse of this.

Iíll be back.
Laz

Hi George!!!!

Konnichiwa minasan, douzo yoroshiku! Hello everyone, pleased to meet you! Razz

Well, I first found out about 5CM and that was when I was "Anime surfing".

I am a fan of Drama, sadness, some comedy and romance types of Anime. While browsing sites where I could read about some of them so I can find a new Anime to watch, I stumbled across 5 Centimeters Per Second. After I have read the info on it in Wikipedia, I went straightaway to watch it online.

I cannot explain in detail the emotions I had afterwards. It was, no, is the best thing I have watched in my life that made me realise how strong emotions are.
Laz

Welcome Junpei

I know what you mean Smile These works definitely resonated with me and it seems with a bunch of others as well.

Junpei

Thank you very much. This is my first time being in a forum where I can express my interests with other people that know what you are talking about and like the same things too.

I think I will be enjoying my stay here. I do hope Makoto Shinkai releases more wonderful works of his soon.
the_emh

well he is taking a holiday in europe if memory serves, so no new stuff for a while. exept for the short he made before going. bit of info on it here.

Junpei

He made a new short?! Where can I watch this? What is it called? Damn I wish I can read Japanese now! My current Jap classes are pretty slow...
Velaciela

Welcome george and Junpei^^ For his new short, I think he was talking about that : http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=rQRQImMxvNU (Neko no Shuukai)
Junpei

Oh haha very cute and good humor. I see Shinkai-san likes cats very much. ^_^
Dy.laneA

Hello everyone, I watched 5 Centimeters Per Second for the first time tonight and after watching the movie twice I was just blown away. I've never seen a narrative quite put together this way and I just loved it.

So I did a quick search to see if there was any forums regarding this sort of director named Shinkai and I think I found it!

I believe ill be enjoying my stay here!

angry_ookami

Hellllloooooo!!!

I am a fan for Mr. Shinkai's work, I saw kanojo to kanojo no neko, hoshi no koe, kumo no muko, byousoku 5 cm, and the cat commercial.. in order.. I was very impressed how Mr. Shinkai did Hoshi no Koe by himself, and ofcourse my fav is Kumo no Muko.

I believe Mr. Shinkai is a very talented person, as well as kind and nice in real life.

Mr. Shinkai's work popularity was limited in my country (Syria) but it increased quickly due to the fact he is coming to Syria (W00t!!11) to attend the screening of his films and make an animation creation workshop (I'm attending) and this is not the end of the story, I will post in another topic Wink

I found this forum via MSFW fan site, thanks for making such forum!!
Junpei

Welcome and enjoy your stay in in CherryBlossomsFalling!

Lucky to have Shinkai-san come to your country. I wish he would come to Australia.  Confused

zitch

Well, I've had an account here for some time now but I haven't properly introduced myself here too well yet.

I was introduced to Shinkai when I did a purchase of the Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in Our Early Days DVD pack and sat down to watch VoaDS.  I was highly impressed by what was being presented in the movie, and astonished that it was animated by a single person.  My most favorite Shinkai animation is She and Her Cat.  There, he is forced by the limited running time to not include many extraneous details in the script, but the 5 minute animation still manages to say quite alot.

Other anime series that I like include The Twelve Kingdoms, Haibane Renmei, Planetes, Kino's Journey, Mushishi, and Vision of Escaflowne.

My other hobbies include firearms shooting, ice hockey and ice skating, and blogging, occaisionally.
Dy.laneA

Welcome Zitch, hope you enjoy your stay! She and Her Cat would be my favorite the next being Tooki Sekai. His short limited animations are basically what I think one would call visual poetry.

Phantast

Hi, everyone!

An acquaintance mentioned a guy named "Makoto Shinkai" that made some good movies, so I thought I'd see if he really was any good. I watched "Beyond the Clouds, the Promised Place" and decided I really liked Shinkai's works. After I recovered from the overdose of sheer awesomeness, I mean. Razz

Since then, I've watched "Hoshi no Koe," "5 Centimeters Per Second" and "She and Her Cat". Out of all of them, 5 Centimeters Per Second is my absolute favorite, but they're all incredible.

I was, needless to say, delighted to find a Makoto Shinkai fan-site that is English-based and (so far as I can tell) still active!
Junpei

As long as there's love for something, anything can stay alive.

And welcome to the site!  Cool

Hi Phantast!

Chobi

Hello everyone, my name is Jon. Im from NH, USA. I found out about shinkai-san by chance really, by browsing the anime on netflix (best place for renting anime), and saw voices of a distant star years ago when it came out. The only info on new works i could really find was from http://daike.hp.infoseek.co.jp/. So I waited and waited until Place promised came out and then i bought the Shinkai collection with both of them in it, and was utterly entranced by his depth and emation and visuals that make every scene a work of art, and tough its animation its almost real at the same time. I just got 5cm per second the other day (the US release) and watched it about three times, and now I'm even a bigger fan. Now I tell all my anime buddies to watch his works because they are the best animes I've ever seen. I love shinaki and his works so much I named my moped Bella Ciela, haha (i love vintage mopeds and vespas). Now I'm very glad to find likeminded fellows.
Junpei

I'm very glad you enjoyed it like we all did. You say you got the 5 CM the other day on the release date? I was told it was delayed and would come out a bit later...

Anyway, Welcome to the forum!
Chobi

Yeah I got it off amazon. It released March 4th apparently. I got it within a few days. It has the three episodes, the making of extras, interview with shinkai, and interview with the japanese voice cast. Its a great DVD. I hear they have a japanese limited edition with music CD and a booklet like the Shinkai collection, i hope that comes out on US release so i can get that too.
Junpei

Oh Amazon, I was talking about the official DVD release.
Dy.laneA

Welcome to the forums Chobi have a nice stay!
Phantast

Hi, Chobi! Welcome to the forums!

I'm planning on buying 5 Centimeters before long, but I'm currently, um, experiencing a negative tendency of my country's currency?
Laz

HI Chobi ... welcome to the forums Smile

Feel free to make yourself at home.

Sounds like you got the US release early. The DVD I got from Amazon is pretty much bare bones ... no English Dub .. just a Sub. I can't wait for the BluRay to come out in the US (just got a PS3 this weekend and just got done watching 5CM through that ... supposed to upscale the quality of normal DVDs).

Laz
Maltos

'ello everyone! I came across these forums after a quick frantic series of links. On Anime UK News there was a news thread that mentioned Shinkai was living in London which had a link to Matoko Shinkai Fan Web which had a link to these forums.
I got into Shinkai after seeing a couple of desktop wallpapers for 'The Place Promised...' so i decided to buy the 'Voices..' and 'Place Promised...' DVD pack. Voices was enjoyable but Place Promised was absolutely stunning. Especially the first part; the art was absolute bliss.
After seeing a couple of screenshots for 5CM i gave it a go but i went in not expecting as much as Place Promised but came out with 5CM being my new favourite film, including even live action films.
Personally i think Shinkai's improved, art and storywise over time and i'm thoroughly await news of his next venture.

I hope to have an enjoyable time here on these forums  Very Happy
Dy.laneA

I agree he is improving his art/story telling ability with each movie so far. I have the exception though that Story wise I enjoyed She and Her Cat alot more then Voices.

I hope his next movie does not have the same theme as his previous movies. But non the less I am awaiting for his next project.

*Edit*

Woops forgot the main reason I posted I should welcome you.

Welcome to the forums Maltos, I hope you enjoy your stay too.
Junpei

Welcome the the site.

Hi Maltos!

HappyCat

Hiya!It was 2007 when i first encountered Hoshi no Koe because of anime magazine speculation that was indeed a very good film(and indeed it was!).I couldn't find a copy first but eventually bought his other work A Place Promised....;first i thought it was boring,a lot of dialogues, less intense actions and silent moments(because i fast forward it on DVD and i was watching an OVA version of Macross Plus before that so,i had to compare these two films[my big mistake])and then came 5cm Per Second.....whoa.It flattened me figuratively and almost literally.Loads of thanks!
Dy.laneA

Hello and welcome to the forums!

A bad point about The Place Promised in Our Early days for me was how slow it felt at the beginning. Very little was happening and the story moved slowly.

This improved greatly with 5 Centimeters. I did not care much for his first two feature films.

She and her cat was great though! Same with other worlds. It was a very unpolished version of she and her cat to me. I hope new motives are explored with his next movie, I don't see much more improvement in the art happening in the future. So all that's left is the story : D
Maltos

I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of Place Promised but i think the sci-fi elements that bombarded the second half ruined the story somewhat~ though i was satisfied with the end. I'm not that fond of Voices either. I think the character designs and animations ruined it partly. The story prooved to be good though as i enjoyed the manga adaption.
I think though Shinkai's artistic talents lie in earthly situations. My favourite examples are the cherry blossoms at the beginning of 5CM, the summer at Bella Ciela garage [the green fields *____*] and the train stations throughout his works. I think the space backgrounds didn't play to his best skills as an artist.

Anways back to the point .____.; Nice to meet you HappyCat.
Dy.laneA

I enjoyed the sci-fi element. I hope he makes more of those in the future, maybe a completely fantastical environment? His art skills are improving astronomically. He must have learned alot form working with so many people. He did not make all the background by him self, but they sure feel like there of Shinkai style.

The way he goes in and out of detail, the colors! The clouds! I'm exited to see his next stories, they have only gotten better with each go.
Junpei

Welcome HappyCat.

Though I was never keen on sci-fi material, Shinkai made it very gripping to me, I couldn't take my eyes off watching The Place Promised then.
Maltos

I think i'd like to see Shinkai do an all out sci-fi film too. I think it'd still need his type of story though~ thus some romance would be involved.

On the first watch of Place Promised the sci-fi elements did spoil it a bit. But watching again [and again. And again. You get the picture] the sci-fi element doesn't bother me as much~ i enjoy it now. Needless to say; it wouldn't be great without the sci-fi element.
Dy.laneA

I have a feeling his next piece is not going to be set anywhere in Japan. I think he immigrated to Europe not only to study English, but to come up with more ideas. He wanted to experience something very new.
Maltos

Well at the moment he's living in London, which is only a couple of hours drive for me if i could find where he is staying. I'd make the trip just to shake his hand. Of course a signed sketch'd be nice too  Laughing

But i agree. I think now that his 'distance trilogy' is complete i think he's looking for new ideas for stories. Though i have no doubts that his new venture will be worth the wait.
Dy.laneA

Ya... I think your right. I read some comments from people saying Voices was more the emotions felt with distance. Places was more trying to hold those relationships together. 5 Centimeters was more letting go of those relationships.
Laz

Hey HappyCat!

Hello everyone. Nice to find a fanforum here Wink I'm from Singapore and you would be pleased to know that I'm currently doing an essay on the works of Makoto Shinkai vis-a-vis realism.

Cheers!
Dy.laneA

I never heard of vis-avis realism. Could you explain this expresion to me? I looked for it in a dictionary but I couldnt understadn what it was saying!

Welcome to the fourms, and have a good stay!

Are you writeing this essay in english? I would love to see it.
AT

Hello and thank you Menasha. Yes the essay will be in English.

In the context I am using, it would mean

OED
B. 1. prep. Over against, in comparison with, in relation to; also lit., facing, face to face with.

Ok, that makes alot more sense then my dictionary I was useing. Thank you very much.

What's the essay for ? Is it school related or an article for a publication?

Hey Laz, just wondering if you have the power to edit the options for us members? I see I can only delete a post if it is the last one in a thread but when someone else posts after it, I cannot delete that post anymore. It would be good if we can delete any posts freely at any times.

hi guys. i know im not new but i thought i would drop you a line and let you know that 1. Im not dead and 2. i haven't forgotten about you.

I'm doing year 12 at the moment so i don't have much time for fun. i was intending to go online during the holidays but ended up spending them at a nuns house in sydney while attending a conference about global warming.

hope you are all well and hopefully after the mid year exams things will slow down enough at school for me to make a few on topic posts.

i see that junpei has given himself ( assuming that you are a He rather than a she, but i sure you would be a pretty she if you where) a †new face. 450 posts too thats quite a feat in a small forum.

i hope everything is going well for you laz just had quick wizz through the forums and it looks like you have no flamers yet. after coming from both the eve online forums and FLAMZILLA aka aussie-nintendo.com that will make a nice change.

hope to type to you again soon Smile

Menasha - Yup. Hopefully we'll get some good info from our correspondent in the UK about after the upcoming screening and Q&A with Shinkai. I think we'll learn a it about what his future plans are at that event.

I'm not sure but I think this thread was meant for discussing anything Shinkai related whilst the other is for new members and introductions.

Good question .... I'll see what I can do to merge the two.

Hiya everyone,

I'm from Sydney Australia, and a great fan of Mr Shinkai. I love all of his work especially Byosoku 5cm and She and her cat.

I study music, and while I am not head-over-heels crazy over Tenmon's music, I do enjoy his contribution to Shinkai's pieces.

I am currently planning to producing a composition work for one of my assessed work based on Shinkai's  She and Her Cat. I will be producing a complete new soundtrack of the short 5 minute work and the work will be performed live later in October this year. This will be completely for educational purposes and a work from a fan.

Should I consider doing a blog of 'how this work will come together' in the She and Her Cat thread? If there is interest then I will keep you guys posted.
gleowine

Welcome, man.exe. And a big southern US howdy!

I for one would like to hear about your project and how it comes together. An alternate soundtrack for She and Her Cat sounds interesting.
Nick

Hey man! I'm two hours up the freeway from you in Newcastle. Welcome to the forums!

Your idea sounds awesome. I only wish I'd discovered Shinkai's stuff earlier on so I could've been inspired to do similar things to your idea. The blog sounds good - should be very interesting. If you've got any previous compositions or you wanna show us your progress you should definitely upload some samples to a site somewhere (or here if that's possible).

I for one am quite a fan of Tenmon so I'll be very interested to hear your take on the short film. Are you in school or at uni or what?
Junpei

Welcome Man! Now you're the one closest to me for I am also here in Sydney. What suburb are you living in?

Your upcoming soundtrack sounds good. I am a big fan of Tenmon.
Nick

btw Junpei I used to live in Como. Most of my family lives there. Went to Como West primary school. My friend's in Roselle. Where abouts are you?
Junpei

I live in Penshurst, and am currently going to Peakhurst high school. Next year, I'll be going to Oatley.
Nick

Oatley! Just across the Woronora! I got a friend up here that used to live there.
Junpei

You seem to have friends that live everywhere haha.

Any chance of meeting up once I go there? Razz
Nick

Hey you never know. We go down that way to visit family reasonably frequently. I'm not going anywhere til end of school though haha.
man.exe

gleowine, Nick, Junpei, thanks for your welcome

I live in inner-west sydney (FiveDock/Cabarita).

I will start up a new thread in regards to the composition work. I have quite a few works, and if there is such interest I might ul some.

I have come up music for short films, and ethnic-community TV commercials. My dream is perhaps to soundtrack a beautiful work like 5cm.
Nick

Look forward to it.

seraphofreverie

I saw the trailer online for 5 Centimeters Per Second by chance --- i had been scanning the web at random.  I don't really know how I found it.
I watched it on the original japanese fansite because it looked pretty.

I just really admire Makoto Shinkai --- his films, 5 Centimeters in particular, addressed some slice of life instances that I had personally experienced or found myself closely similar to.  Because of this relationship, they remain to be my favorite films of all time.

I'm really glad this forum is here --- its frustrating to want to talk about something that means a great deal to ones self, and there isn't anyone nearby who understands.

I have both Voices and The Place Promised In Our Early Days; I'm working on getting 5 Centimeters, but since ADV stopped distribution, my purchase is being "backordered" for who knows how long.  Its very frustrating.  I used to have the original japanese version, but it was stolen from me.

Anyway, glad to be here --- this is a really nice forum.
Nick

Welcome to the forums, seraphofreverie! (you got a shorter name?)

Hope you like it here and decide to stick around. There's some really cool and interesting people to meet.

gleowine

Hey, Ally. Is it ok to call you that? Welcome!

I just popped over to rightstuf.com to see, and they have 5 CM in stock. That is, if you can't wait.
seraphofreverie

Of course you can call me Ally --- that was the purpose of me posting it.
Junpei

Hello and welcome to you Ally.

Hope you get hold of 5 Centimeters soon, it's a must-have to almost everyone here.

Hello everyone!

I became an instant fan of Mr Shinkai upon seeing 5 cm per sec on the internet. I was just way too curious on the title. (Film festivals doesnt hold much Japanese movies here in my country. Sad )
Then my love for his works grew further. Now Ive seen Kanojo to Beyond the Clouds to Voices... all in a week.

Someday I hope to visit †and see for myself all the lovely sceneries he incorporated in the stories.

Its great to be part of this Makoto Shinkai Forum!

Hi all!

This is my first post and I want to say hello to all of you Shinkai's fans. I'm from Italy and I apologize if my English is not very good.

I didn't know anything about him till last week, when, wondering around the web, I found "5 cm per seconds" and it was a real surprise. I mean, it is not a simple anime, the message is pure poetry and the work is tecnically perfect (the drawings, the music, the dialogs). The story gave me a very intense feeling from the first minute, it has been a very powerful experience. I liked a lot the way Makoto talked about the distance (both spacial and temporal) and the effects that it can have on two people that loves each other but they are too young to understand their feelings and after some years they are too far away.

By the way, I hope you have understood that after that I saw that movie I wanted to know everything about this fantastic artist and so...here I am Smile
gleowine

Welcome Gian! And a big "howdy!" from the Deep South in the USA.
Gian

Thanks a lot gleowine Wink
