This is the translation of Shinkai's latest blog,Aug 24. Many thanks for Nick, he helped me a lot in translation.
The original version is here. http://www2.odn.ne.jp/~ccs50140/colum2008.html
It has been a long time since my last update. Every day is the same - going to school, visiting museums, taking a walk in a park, preparing meals for myself, reading books, watching DVDs, listening to music - this is my daily life and I always go to sleep before it is too late in the night. The end of August is just around the corner. The days are getting shorter, while nights are getting longer.
I don't often take photos these days, but today I went for a walk with my camera. Besides that I don’t have much else to say for this report .
(1)In London, most people like dogs (on a fine day, you can see all kinds of dogs in the park!), but cats also exist in this city. There is a large domestic cat who often appears in the neighborhood.
(2)He is really harmless. As soon as I pat him, he will show this belly. Oh, how is Sayuri (Sayuri, the name of Shinkai’s cat) these days? I miss her a lot and I often see her in my dreams.
(3)There is a large parking area beside a park, but it changed into an amusement park suddenly. It is a moving amusement park which only opens for a short time. Unfortunately, because of the rain in the morning, there were few visitors. The park was much lonelier when compared with a famous festival held in Notting Hill on the same day.
(4)The Ferris wheel looks terrible. I really do not want to get on it . The base of the Ferris wheel is a big truck.
(5)Although the conditions are different in each area, there are too many churches in my neighborhood, which makes me a little surprised. I can often hear hymns on Sundays. The community is functioning properly here.
(6)I bought a hamburger for my lunch. The storekeeper was biting an apple when baking the meat. He looked unmotivated in his work, but his hamburger was delicious.
I went to Tokyo after I graduated from high school. Three years passed before I become familiar with the city’s streets and scenery. Maybe some people can adapt to new environments very quickly, but I need a lot of time to do it. Today, when I was walking down the street, I found I had been here for half a year, and my physical strength is getting limited. The sky, with no electric wires, the unfamiliar sound of an ambulance, different money and language - all of these still make me a little nervous, but I can face them with a lighter heart now.
It is a pity that I have to return to Japan before I get used to London completely. But I am really looking forward to making animation with my stuff in Tokyo; however, that is a story for the near future.

Thanks for posting Kzoue. My heart is lighter now having some idea of what Shinkai has been up to.

It was autumn now. London's streets are pervaded with the smell of dead leaves.
I moved into a new house. It is the third house after I came to London. The minimum period of last room's contact was expired, and I would like to live in a different area, too. So, I decided to move recently. The picture is the view from the window of the new house.
The high buildings in the distance are the waterfront redevelopment district along the Thames. The new area is quite different from the serene community I used to live. The noise of young men's parties can be heard even in the late night. But my monotonous life didn't change.
A friend who lives in London helped me to move. He is a sneaker manufacturer and gave me a pair of New Balance's new product to me as present. The photo of the shoes is on the left.
The shoes are very comfort to wear, and I am very happy to get such a nice present. There is some specific information in this site (http://www.beinghunted.com/). The product can be ordered from Japan.
Shops have already begun to sell Christmas decorations. It is surely the same in Japan. As the daytime is getting short, I spend more time in my room and enjoy reading a book I bought from a second-hand bookstore. What's more, little by little, I begin to prepare for my new film. Although I still need a lot of time before I can make it into anime and show it to you, I think this is the largest work I have made so far. Please be patient and wait for my information. _________________ You're a woman, I'm a calf ... you're a window, I'm a knife ... we come together making chance into starlight ... - Jeff Buckley

I just browsed through the older blog posts (just looking at the pictures, obviously), and I'm wondering: is there a backlog of english translations of the blog? I'd really like to read back over the older stuff.
Gee he really likes that cat, hey? _________________ There are certain moments where some people should just be left unknown. |

Thanks for posting Laz.
So this is almost the end of the beginning of his biggest work yet. I get the feeling Shinkai is bursting to make it though I hope he doesn't get over excited and rush.
I think we all, too, are really bursting for the new film to come out - nothing wrong with that. But as we looking so forward to it, we might expect too much and could sadly in some way be disappointed when it finally does get released.
I suggest we go on with our lives normally, not waiting impatiently, nor even patiently, but know it will eventually be there when it's ready. I think that way, we will receive much more from the film.
