Yeah .... I could empathize in that I had a train ride to and from high school each day and just zoning out watching the city go by was a nice part of the day. He seems like a pretty quiet and sensitive guy.

I'm not sure if it was intentional, but I've always pictured this small bases to the movie... Two people meet in highschool and begin to fall in love with each other and make a promise that they will always be together. One day, one of them wakes up, and relizes they dont love the other any more. "Her feeling that she was going to lose something" In the end, that's all I really saw that was lost.

Was the first thing I identified with after watched the movie twice.

From my understanding, the thing that Sayuri lost was the memory of the dream and the memory of her connection with Hiroki. However There was a translation in a sub version I have seen where, just after Sayuri wakes up, she realises that the important thing she needs to share with Hiroki is gone, however Hiroki says "It's alright. you're awake now, We can get it all back again, starting now." I loved Sayuir's reaction to this. They could start again. Hiroki's memories of the dreams were still there. Their connection could be restored.

As for the opening and closing scenes, where Hiroki arrives at the airfield alone in the summer at the start of the movie, post tower, and the plane returns to the airfield, also in the summer at the end of the movie - also post tower. I like to look at this as two bookends for the story - where Hiroki is alone at the beginning, where the promise is unfulfilled, and at the end, after the events have taken place, where he is together with the one he loves, after fulfilling the promise. Whether it fits the timeline or not is unimportant - call me a romantic Wink

I guess I am looking for the happy ending. The movie really provoked me to invest emotionally in the characters and the story. It is one of the only anime's that have brought me to the brink of tears.

So far, this is my favourite Makoto Shinkai piece, although I haven't seen 5 Centimeters per Second yet - the DVD probably wont be released in Australia for some time yet.

Well, there's my two cents.

Have fun

Hi cbatty ... see I'm on the other side. In the beginning I don't get the feeling that he and Sayuri are together ... or at least, they haven't gotten back what they once had. I get the sense that Hiroki is longing for what he had back before Sayuri woke up ... which leads me to believe he hasn't gotten it yet.

Great insight ... welcome to the Forums Smile

I watched this recently and finally understood what Sayuri was talking about. The feelings that she had for Hiroki were those from the alternate reality in which she was stuck. So, when that reality was destroyed with the tower, so were those feelings. That is what she lost, which is why she sobs at the end, "it's gone." But it took Hiroki a long time to figure this out, which is why we see him alone at the beginning of the movie. Sayuri has been able to move on, but he hasn't.

EDIT: Sorry, I think I've just repeated what everyone else has said. I had to get up an hour early this morning to go to work, so my brain is still running in low gear.

I think the end is pretty open.  He could just as well be going to meet Sayuri.  Maybe they are taking the Bela Ciela out for a spin years later (like the scene post-credits).  Although presumably any two people will have evolving feelings for each other over the years.... it's not that the old feelings die so much as they're given away, or freed.  I think that may be the symbolism with the airplane.  Changing passengers, same Bela Ciela.  (Although that makes it sound like a shining white Rabu Hotel in the sky huhuhuhu)  More than open or closed I thought the ending really can't be explained by the characters so much as just the immanent emotion

I think one of you asked, if they had the tower why didn't they see it coming?

I can think of several reasons. I believe when takuya was researching his own little tower they confirmed the existence of at least 7 branch universes. The azo tower was on a much larger scale.

Also, we know know that Sayuri's sleep was suppressing the tower's function.

If the Azo Tower was intended to be able to interface with alternate universes and ultimately, see into the future, why the heck couldn't the Union see what was coming ? At one point, I think it's Takuya, says that he thinks the tower designer and the UILTA freedom group were both doing the same thing ... protesting the division. Maybe Sayuri's Grandfather built that tower to spur the Alliance into a war/unification by putting something intimidating or scary out there ... even if it didn't work properly for the Union. Any opinions ?

Might be a good subject for a fan-fiction piece, the war as viewed from the other side. What were they actually using that tower for? Was Sayuri's grandfather still involved with it? Did he design it to tap into Sayuri's dreams, or was that just an unforeseen consequence of the design? Hmm...

Hey folks ... I was watching A Place Promised ... the other night. As always ... the images and the colors are spectacular.

The one scene that caught my eye was as Takuya is starting to pass out after being wounded in the boat ... he looks up and sees a white bird ... and the scene immediately goes to Sayuri looking up to see the Bella Ciela. Just a nice transition and symbolism from the white bird/dove to the airplane.

Anyway ... always a pleasure to watch this film Smile

when this came out here in the UK i watched it every other night for about 2 months cause i loved it so much!
i haven't seen it for a while now tho so (if i remember) i'll stick it on again this week.
i agree with what has been posted in this topic already, it is the most beautiful film he has made visually, every scene is a work of art imo.

i have a question tho Question , on the dvd there is a trailer called 'The Special Preview Trailer' with different visuals & scenes (where Sayuri is walking along a wall & climbing to the top of a pointed tower etc), the Bela Cielo looks different & everything has a more typical anime feel about it.
so was this an earlier version of it & was it ever released or even finnished? as i would love to see it cause it looks stunning Shocked
