Let's run a first public test on Saturday. Here's the connection info for Ventrillo:
Host: rakushun.nickistre.net
Port: 3784
I actually have the server running all the time right now, but I'll probably be on at Noon Central Time.
If someone could, write up instructions on how to setup Ventrilo for those who aren't as technically inclined.
Also, please use headphones if you want to speak. I tend to have difficulty chatting when my own voice is being repeated to me 1-2 seconds after I say stuff. Kindof gets disorienting...
Hope to talk to some of you!

Unfortunately, I can't speak portuguese. Hell, I barely speak what is traditionally called "English"...
In truth, I want to separate the chat to different languages as to avoid too much cross-talk. Something like:
English
Chinese (Mandarin)
Spanish
Portuguese
Japanese
etc.
Of course, the above list is only an example, and it would mainly make sense if several people speaks a particular language that warrants making a separate channel for it.
Under these language channels, I'd like to create separate channels for more specific discussions, like
English/Shinkai's work
English/General Anime
English/Other discussion
This would be more fluid; I or another administrator would create these channels as more people login people's topics start diverging.
At some point, we will have to create a list of languages that people speak. For now, list the languages you can speak (or wish to speak in). Some time later, I'll make a topic specific to this discussion.
We might have to plan to have separate admins for the more popular different languages too, but we will discuss that later. |

Ok, just noticed something that might be a problem: I noticed that the public version Ventrilo offers supports a max of 8 clients. And they only offer a "Pro" version to resellers that can support more than that.
Crap... this changes things, as I'm sure we will go past that limit. I'll still hold the test this weekend on my personal connection (which should be able to handle more than 8 connections, even now) and looks into what I can do. I might end up renting a server for a month if we can figure out how many people will be connecting via Ventrilo.
In the future, I'll look into alternatives. |

I know what you mean Zitch
I don't understand anything about Vent., and must say about voice chat, but the other day I had a voice and video talk, with my nephew (lives in Paris) thru MSN, this wouldn't work?
On my part isn't need to create other chat. If I can I'll get to the English chat.
So, let me give you the congratulations, this seems very hard working.
This forum sure has handy people _________________

IsUa, the problem with MSN is... well, Microsoft. I don't know if there's an MSN client for Mac OS X that will support voice conferencing, and I definitely know that there is no client for Linux.
The more I look, the more it looks like using Skype might be the best option. It seems conferencing is free, though I don't know of the capabilities of it, or if we can make separate "channels" in a single conference, etc.
Or if we want to run our own servers, looks like we're limited to Teamspeak. Unfortunately, Teamspeak's Mac OS X support doesn't seem to be as good as Ventrilo.
I'll still be on Vent tomorrow, though. Hope to see you there. |

Hey Zitch,
So I downloaded the Ventrillo client and installed it. Now I have it setup with the server and port info, etc. But I have two questions:
1) I see in the window "? MSG: Contacting Server" What does this mean? This appeared after I inputted the server info and before I even clicked "Connect."
2) Do we have to make any changes in "Setup"?
It seems like a simple program. If I can get connected and things working, I'll write up some easy instructions and post them here. |

Gleowine, I'm not sure what the problem would be. I'd assume you have a User Name setup and tested your mic and headphones under Setup?
I did a search for that error, and I can't find anything definite about it. |

Well, the more I look around, the more it seems Skype might be a better option for what we are trying to do, for several reasons:
1) It has much better support of different O.S. (Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux)
2) It supports up to 25 people conferences (Mac OS X probably should get the beta client)
3) It's free to use.
Go and download the client for your O.S. (For Mac OS X, I might recommend the Beta client because the current one only says it supports 10 in a conference) and create an account and post your Skype ID here.
Feel free to add mine: Nicholas.Istre
If you do, please add your ID to this post.
I want to try to get several people together next Saturday to test this.
Thoughts or comments, anyone?
