What if you guys were put in any of the character's shoes? Would you summon the courage to say everything you wanted or just act like they did?
This has seriously bugging me lately since I'm sure I'd end up doing the same thing as the characters (but the movies are realistic, so I believe that relating to them is the point). I would probably summon the courage to give Takaki the letter, but if I were Kanae I'd keep my mouth shut as well.
I'm guessing you guys can't relate to the girls, so just think what you'd do if you were Takaki

Hmmmm .... if I were Takaki I would've given Akari the letter or at least tried to keep in touch. I probably would have moved on ... I need closure on those types of things ... but that's just me

| Having actually given heartfelt letters to girls in my younger years and gotten rejected, I would probably have chickened out. But if Akari had been my first love, I sure I would have held onto that letter with dear life and stuck it in her bag when she wasn't looking. |

If I was Takaki I would have thrown the letter away and told her how I felt, face-to-face.
...At least I hope that's what I would do. I've never really been in that situation before. |

Awww... a shame that people stopped writing letters now that mobile phones are popular.. _________________ Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most. |

If I were Takaki I think that I would have act as he did, more or less. But definetly I also would have tried to keep in touch with her. I mean that it is sufficient to do a phone call to say "Hi, how are you?" just to let her know that I'm here and that she can count on me.
Anyway, these are only my thoughts, but you know, young people aren't always able to understand their own feelings and when they do, they think it's too late. |

Greetings from Portugal. First I´m sorry for my bad english...
I need a little intro, I´m a anime fan. Until, 1 month ago, I never heard of Makoto Shinkai and my first contact with is work was 5 CM, I was speechless, for me, this film is amazing....
After this, what I´ve done...something similar to Takaki (it's very difficult to deal with first love), and Takaki need a strong women (that takes control).
The problem with Kanae (apart from he can´t forget Akari), was that she does'nt believe in herself, and to take a man (boy), to forget, in this case, is first love, that person needs to be confident, positive and not serious (happy). (Remember talk in the shop when Takaki said...Sumida, you're somehow always so very earnest...).
In the end, when he saw Akari, he needs to closure, he must follow Akari and talk to her (a few years ago I find my first love, that I never told her that I love her (I was to afraid)..., we talk and now she is my best friend, she is married, I´m also married, she is godmather of my first son...), a good relation doesn´t have to be sexual it needs to be spiritual..., like the one that he (Takaki) had with Akari in chapter one.
I´m almost finishing...My favorite chapter is 2, and Kanae is the women for him. How? I will say in another post.
Is it me, or we need 5Cm part 2... _________________

| In Kanae's situation, I'd no doubt summon every ounce of courage I have and tell Takaki what she almost did in the film. I had silently cried after the end of the second chapter seeing her lose her final opportunity of confession after so long. Not one word was uttered about her true feelings. It was deeply saddening seeing Kanae curled up weeping in the middle of the night knowing something precious had slipped from her grasp into oblivion. |

I've always been a "closure" person ... and I'm glad that I did "confess" a few times and at least have a funny story or two out of it. It feels better than carrying that regret around. I have enough of that as well
Take a chance ... at least you'll get a funny story out of it if it doesn't work out
