I keep thinking that Right Stuf may have the right idea: release new anime in sub-only versions, like with Emma, Aria and Maria. It's cheaper for them to do, and it gets it to the fans quicker (at least that's what I've heard). If the next Shinkai film came like that, or a new release of 5CM, it would be OK with me.

As far as AU goes, I know whatever anime it'll be, will be distributed by Madman Entertainment.

I wouldn't mind about having only subs.  However, there are some series that the dub surpasses the japanese language track.  One example is the anime series You're Under Arrest, the dub was even applauded by the japanese director of the series.  There's always the possibility of something like that happening.  It's also a good indication of the current state of the anime industry here in the US, how many series are being brought over with and without dubs can show how a company could be doing.

(Beginning my own speculation)
One example is with Media Blasters (the Anime Works title), I noticed after they acquired and released Ah! My Goddess, that nearly all of their titles over the course of roughly the next half year to a full year were nothing but sub releases.  They noted that Ah! My Goddess was their most expensive license and that no matter how well it sells, it will not be profitable.

Which rounds out to the next part which is more on topic.  ADV Films acquired the second season to AMG entitled Ah! My Goddess Flights of Fancy.  It featured all the same voice actors and actresses from the Media Blasters release, kept the same package design as well as episodes per disc as Media Blasters.  Then following up on that, I noticed that ADV went through financial troubles as well the Sojitz split.

Although it may just be one large coincidence.  That could be a possibility on why they no longer have the 5CM license.  The AMG - Flights of Fancy license could have been extremely costly in the same vein as what Media Blasters went through after their initial release of the first season, and then the ADV-Sojitz split following after the release of AMG - Flights of Fancy.
(End of my speculation)

I still believe that if any company will pick up 5cm in the US, it'll be FUNimation.  Mainly because they seem to be the ones to pick up what was left behind one way or another.  How they are redistributing plenty of titles from Geneon Entertainment and redistributing the Sojitz titles.

I don't know how may folks are up on the downsizing in the industry .. ZOMGanime has some recent articles on companies cutting staff and US distributors cutting the numbers of anime they are going to be releasing.

its sad to hear that there is a reduction in anime releases on the way but not really unexpected. I dont know about the US but i know that in australia anime is stupidly expensive so when times get hard people will just stop buying it. I assume that piracy will play a large role in this as well because people strapped for cash will just DL the series instead of buying it.

It is unfortunate because now i have less chance of seeing some of my fave anime localized... like EF for example.

also. does anyone have the US version of the DVD? how is the dub on it?
