Didn't have anything else to watch this past weekend, so popped this one in. That's sad, I know. "5cm as a last resort. Has it come to this?"
Anyway, something I became aware of while watching, though it's probably been discussed before. I think the reason everyone gets mad at Takaki for the way he treats Kanae is because they perceive his sense of inadequacy in matters of the heart. First it was with Akari; you can see it when she's the one running ahead of him, then throughout the train trip as it took longer and longer for him to get there, then the way he let the letter slip away from his grasp; it's like he can't do anything right. But it was always Akari who seemed to be the confident and considerate one, which showed in her letters and in the way she had a meal prepared for their meeting. But even while kissing her and holding her in his arms, Takaki still felt unsure of where to go from there.
Next, with Kanae, it was she who felt uncertain of herself. Nevertheless, Takaki simply couldn't help her with her feelings, because he had his own to deal with. Kanae learned how to overcome hers through surfing; still, even though he was good at a lot of things, Takaki always felt like he was falling short. People might blame Takaki, but he simply didn't have (or thought he didn't have) what it took to make a relationship work. There are guys like that, especially in their younger years. I know I was like that, so I can identify with him. Not everyone is able to open themselves up freely with a person of the opposite sex and so develop a lasting relationship.
In the last part, I think that Risa was the one who broke up with Takaki, because she could tell that they were going nowhere. Perhaps that was the wake-up call for him, and led to his quiting his job. In the end, realizing what had held him back for so long and having to face it, he was able finally to move forward.
Well, I've said a mouth-full, but thought I'd share that.

I must say I have not seen many of Shinkai's work past Voices and She and Her Cat, so would anyone be willing to suggest one for me?
I don't like just jumping into another series blindly, and from what I have read of 5 CM Per Second, I am half wondering if I should give this series a miss? _________________ 'Thou shalt not converse with me' - Quas Farroway |

I'll check it out, if only for curiosity's sake and let you know my thoughts on it in the next week. Cheers. _________________ 'Thou shalt not converse with me' - Quas Farroway |

Thetwo other movies you must see are A Place Promised in Our Younger Days and 5cm Per Second. Definitely let us know what you think _________________ You're a woman, I'm a calf ... you're a window, I'm a knife ... we come together making chance into starlight ... - Jeff Buckley

Heh, the two I haven't seen Quas are the two you have, I've been meaning to see Voices for so long but I guess I know it'll be depressing. _________________ I have opinions, opinions on things |

They are both on the same disc, She and Her Cat in the extras of Voices and it is pretty easy to find. Depressing? Depressing? All I will say is don't watch it after a bad day or you'll need to break out the tissues! _________________ 'Thou shalt not converse with me' - Quas Farroway |

| Shinkai doesn't have too many works so you should definitely check out everything you haven't seen in my opinion, especially the newest film, 5 Centimeters Per Second. |

Well as luck would have it, I was able to ask my sister a few days ago if she could get me a copy of this and she told me she owned one, so I sat down early this morning and watched it with expectations that it would be as good as Voices and I was surprised to find that it was even better, not just in the story line but character and musically.
I think when I finish writing the story version of Voices of A Distant Star (right from the mini-sode) I will watch and re-watch 5Cm and try and put that into a story version also.
Watch out for the Voices story-version coming to the Mokoto Shinkai forum soon! _________________ 'Thou shalt not converse with me' - Quas Farroway |

Cool, I'm glad you liked it. I better watch Voices before you finish your story now.
