i am sorry for playing necromancer here and reviving a dead thread but i would like to add a few things.
after watching other anime similar to shinkai's work i would say that most of them have a tendency to be more "melodramatic." look at EF as an example. most tend to have the " IM EMOTIONAL I NEED TO SHOUT" syndrome as well lol. i don't personally mind it or see it as a problem. the whole point of this genre is to convey emotion, and it does it well. and if Shinkai's works are sappy then i hate to think what some of the others are lol
(i still dont think that shinkai is sappy BTW)

As a critic I'd probably have to say that he is in danger of being labelled "sappy", but as a fan I can't say that. I mean when you're watching the films you're not thinking, "oh this is way too sappy and emo", you're drawn into the story too much for that. _________________ There are certain moments where some people should just be left unknown. |

I don't feel there to "sappy" not sure if I've said it before but I feel there very clique, not so much she and her cat and places, but the others, very cliqure in my opinion. Is that a bad thing? No, I think alot of cliques are cliques for a reason! Cliques have alot of truth held in them, like for example one we here all the time. "Never give up" is extremly clique! Does that make it wrong/bad? Nope! _________________ You know your old when, you reapeat things... you repeat things... you repeat things. |

It's funny this thread originated because I had read a review in one of the anime new services (Might have been ANN) that kinda put Shinkai down for the sentimentality of his works .. like 5 CM. I totally disagree with the reviewer, but people can have their opinions.
If Shinkai purposefully set out to be emotional or went over the top in his story telling, I would be more inclined to call something like that "Sappy" ... but I feel that the emotions in the films grow more naturally and are more subtle than a forced, over the top, attempt to get people to feel a certain way. Shinkai's works evoke emotions in me that pre-existed, it doesn't cause me to feel something that I've never experienced. It's that resonance with me, individually that I think is great because he's able to resonate with each of you as well. His works become personal to me ... because he taps into those feels rather than forces them on me.

| it is not too emotional but it could deal with more various feelings. i guess that makes it sappy, though still very real |

I agree with you partially there davus. I think that for Shinkai's films, the point is perhaps to be so emotional, heck, maybe even sappy, but portray the emotions and experiences in such an honest, and earnest, way, that it never appears contrived.
