Voices - Distance to a nearby star.
Places - Distance across dreams.
Five CM per Second - Distance across Japan
So, given the trend, it is going to be:
1) Distance across the street?
2) Distance between purple and green?
3) Distance to the living room?
4) Distance across the couch?
5) Distance between wanting pizza or sushi?
Would have thought you might have thrown in some Quantum Mechanics.
Too much variations of distance/s......time to get over it.
The direct threat of atomic destruction that paralyzes our lives, in ways not even most of us can even see ahead of ourselves. And this deterrence comes from that fact that even the real atomic clash is precluded. Deterrence precludes war - the archaic violence of expanding systems. Like the eventuality of living beyond our best and worse outcomes.
Nevertheless I have not likened Shinkai to the caliber of Hideo Kojima.....that's two worlds apart in storytelling.
We can only speculate. Who knows what the next film will be themed on? Certainly not that guy across the street from my home. But if zitch's theory on the pattern is anywhere close to being correct, then I would say it's got to be something about homes. And I'd wager the legendary element of distance will be included.
ehhh maybe the distance between this country and the next fack.
Boy meets girl, girl is sent away abroad to England, she then falls in love there, boy wallows in pain. Ohhhhhh ohhh the distance T___T
Nah how about some sci fi, a lovely alien girl and a human guy, (girl owns a space cat named Chobi. Girl goes distance from him for x reason maybe the distance between each others planets is too much. Boy wallows in pain.
Or how about normal boy from present and girl from future get together, girl grows distance from him, the distance between there times is to great, boy wallows in pain. (Did I mention the time cat names Chobi)
Boy meets cool girl from alternate dimension, distance from alternate dimension to great, girl moves distance, boy wallows in pain. Boy gets a cat named Choibi.
I want more of shinkais stuff even if it is so so very similar XD Honestly in every single film other then She and Her cat. There is a girl, that grows distance towards the guy and the guy is pained because of this.
Perhaps, uhmmmmm, I don't know, ehhhhh, say 5 to ......10, maybe 20 years.....you look back at old archives of anime, wherever it may be, your old home VHS, DVD, Blue Ray...or whatever format in existence at that time....and you say to yourself "Hey....it's the distance guy.....what's his name again, ahhhhh, yeah I got it, Shinkai something.....uhmmmmm, right, it's this Makoto Shinkai....the distance man.....all his work changes is slightly different ways.....but you can always count on his old motif....good ole distance.
"The distance man". Ohhhh yeah, right now, that's the name that catches me the most about Shinkai......I went to Animefest just about 2 weeks ago....just me and a couple of friends. We went there just to see what it was about for the past 3 days....being there on the third.....place was packed...wall to wall, shopping like crazy, cosplay out by the promenade in full glory.
So inside.....just taking it easy, cruising thru the crowds....one thing I did like about the turn out....was that the female factor, that was unexpected....but hey, not a bad thing....I like to see girls taking a forefront at anime conventions.
So...minutes after....there I am, theater C.....screening of 5 Centimeters Per Second....sat there.....watched it......and left.
Met back up with my friends....one of whom told me......"you watch that again.....what's up with that....damn man, it's always that anime...you need something different and that distance anime guy needs to find some other muse".
The worse thing.....he was right.....distance, distance, distance....it's getting too repetitive and downright too moody.
Shinkai.....by me....needs to expand and not just show some new style and still keep us with this so called distance style that has become so common in his works.
Don't be surprised if one of Shinkai's works becomes the main advertisement for a new form of anti-depressants.
Cause like my friend stated when we were hanging out drinking after the animefest....."5 Centimeters Per Second.....I love it...I still do...cause it made me understand a piece of myself with relationships....but then again, watching it and understanding a piece of myself, made me more lenient to remain taking Wellbutrin....cause after watching it time and time again.....I need to feel a sense of wellness...not further depression....not from an adapted form, no matter how good it is.....Shinkai, I love ya...but common man......get a girlfriend....wife....somebody's wife.....be happy and give us something besides watching relationships ripped apart and sadness......GO SHINKAI".
As much as sitting there....laughing like crazy around the table outside with everyone watching.....I realized, that even though it was the alcohol talking.....it had truth in it.
I would honestly be relieved to hear that Shinkai was working on a new story further exploring his classic theme of distance.
In a way, this sense of focus reminds me of legendary director Yasujiro Ozu, who made so many great films throughout his life (including the highly acclaimed Tokyo Story, which consistently ranks in the top 5 films ever made in critics polls) arranged around the central, underlying theme of marriage and the family.
I would like to see Shinkai pick up this very intense style where Ozu left off in 1962, it would at least be a refreshing change from the Schizophrenic style of so many modern directors.

agree!
i'd hate to see Shinkai direct a horror or comedy etc (something completely different)... that would be a mistake for him imo & thats not what fans want or would look farward too, i can see his next project being not too different from his previous works & personally i'd like to see more of the distance/memories stories he does so well
i think it will be a full length feature this time round (like 'Place Promised') & maybe planetary distance or other countries etc like other members have mentioned.
whatever he creates next i'm sure it will be a masterpiece as all of his works have been so far.
