Well, we now have some hints on what it might be about:

Quote:
In his comments to the audience, Shinkai acknowledged that it has been some time since his last work (2007's 5 Centimeters Per Second) but he added, "We're making a new work now." While he cautioned that an official announcement has yet to be made, he gave a simple outline of what his team is making.

The new work will be his longest animation film to date, and the story will revolve around one heroine, a cheerful and spirited girl. Shinkai noted that most of his works in the past decade were stories about characters who have to part ways with those they hold dear, but he wants to take that theme even further. Through the new heroine, Shinkai is planning to deal more specifically on how to overcome that loss.

Interesting.  Can't wait to hear more info (and ofcourse, watch it when it comes out... Smile )

Ya beat me Zitch Smile

Yeah ... I like the fact that he's "extending" his original themes. I'll see if I can dig a little more when I'm over there Smile

Exciting stuff.

I like the last statement about overcoming loss. The main comment we got during GSD was how "sad" his works were. I'm really look forward to it now, more than I was before.

Indeed, and I see this as a further progression of his "distance" theme he's keeping with. áI don't think any of his major movies really directly dealt with overcoming that loss:

She and Her Cat: Only hint of the loss itself (the phone call) and a hint of how to overcome it (my interpretation: time).

Voices of a Distant Star: Practically sidestepped the dealing of loss (it is inferred that they meet at the end, manga goes a bit further with this theme)

Place Promised: Again, sidestepped the dealing of loss.

5 CM: Subtly hinted how Takaki dealt with this loss; most people miss this on first (and even on multiple) viewing.

If he is able to pull this off, he will push past his usual themes into something somewhat new, yet still related to what he has been doing. áI'm getting a bit excited myself!

Well, let's not get too excited; still need to hear more info... á Very Happy

ADD: áWell, that doesn't mean we can't speculate now, does it?

I just wonder if a death of a loved one will play a part in this one. áIt is a cliche'd way of creating a separation between two people, but it is also the most permanent way of doing so and Shinkai has yet to go down this road (She and Her Cat has it as a possibility of why She was crying, but it was never specified). áThis could be handled badly, yet it can be very well used (I.E., see the first few episodes of Cross Game) and I have faith that Shinkai can pull it off, especially if he's going back to a full feature film format (Look at how the first act of The Place Promised establishes the relationship between the three main characters before ripping them apart for the second act).

ADD 2: Oh, BTW, I do hope he can continue to give Chobi a cameo in the new movie...  Wink

Now that you mention it, Shinkai never actually killed any of his characters did he? It would certainly be interesting if that were the case on the upcoming film.

I'm looking forward to reading more news on this.

And while Laz is out, Shinkai posted a few concept images on this page and on his home page!  (Check out the banner image and the image on the second entry (first one dated 12/24).

Hopefully, someone can translate!

I tried picking out the words in the banner and looking them up. I could only get "shojo = girl", "mukau = head for", "sayonara = farewell", and "tabi = journey." The ANN article translates:

A girl is heading on a journey to say "farewell."

So much for Japanese 101.

Looks like Shinkai is using a working title of "sayonara" (or goodbye), check out the link to the image pages:

http://www2.odn.ne.jp/~ccs50140/sayonara/index.html

No guarantee that it will be the name of the final movie, though.

Oh, and Daike has a translation of the page, I'll copy as follows:

Quote:
--A girl is going to start a journey,
towards to say "Goodbye."--

Announcement about New Work

Now, we are making new feature animated film in our studio. We don't decide its title and premiere date yet, but the main staffs of "5cm per Second" are in studio again and in the midst of a struggle. We can't tell you details, but outline is that its main character is a girl, and it will be an amusing anime which includes adventure, action and love.
In making storyline, I have placed some themes in the film. If I talk about them to my regular customers including you viewing this page, I'm making this film with awareness of the problem about life-- how we should live through beyond the sense of loss which I mentioned in my past works (Voices of a Distant Star, The Place Promised in Our Early Days, 5cm per Second). At the same time, we'll make the new work an entertaining anime for young audiences. You can enjoy it without taking too seriously.

We'll launch official site to announce details at some stage, but we need a little more time.

I'm happy if you kindly wait till the premiere.
