Just came back from watching it; I found it ok.  It's a bad sign when I want to see someone put a bullet in the head of the lead at one point in the movie.

Plus, I've just been a bit tired of these "documentary-style" movies, in truth.

This movie just proved how bad Cloverfield was.

I do agree, this one was better than Cloverfield.

I hadn't seen Cloverfield, so I don't have much to compare it to.

I liked it, it was different from anything I've seen in a while.

I liked it more than Cloverfield, but that one didn't really win me over.

I thought District 9 was to sci-fi this year what Watchmen was to superhero movies, proof they can be intelligent, thought provoking and still entertaining. I really liked it but still thought it was a bit rough around the edges. Kinda wish it spent more time on the backstory at the start.

In truth, I think I'm being a bit harsh on District 9.  I've probably been comparing it to media with subtlety and hidden messages everywhere in it (I.E., normal Pixar, Miyazaki, or Shinkai work, for example).  I found that District 9's handling of its messages was handled with the subtlety of a kick to the crotch, but the fact that it does contain messages about very serious issues (apartheid is bad, mmkay?  And middle managers in a sucky system aren't necessarily evil) does actually make it one of the most intelligent summer blockbuster action movies we will see for some time.

As it was, I went to the movie only because a few friends wanted to see it and I had never heard of it or did any research on it.  Also, I don't watch TV at all, so I went into the movie completely cold without *any* idea what it was about.  If I had gone into it expecting the average summer blockbuster, I'd probably be pleasantly surprised.

Zitch ... you seem to critically analyze a lot of what you watch Smile Do watch stuff just for fun?

Nothing wrong with critical analysis, by the way Smile

I completely agree, I was wishing it would be toned down a bit. Some of the parts meant to shock us just kept going a bit too long. Not to mention the ridiculous swearing and the fact that the bad guy may as well have been shaking the main character and yelling "I'M THE BAD GUY!!"

I did walk out pleased and entertained though. Pretty good movie, I just wasn't blown away.
