The new film has a name.

星を追う子ども
or
Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo
or
Children who chase lost voices from deep below

It also has a website:

http://www.hoshi-o-kodomo.jp/top.php

Oh yeah.

And a teaser trailer. Smile
I can't find an official source for it, but this guy's recorded it. It streamed at noon, Japan time, November 9th. It's in the following link.

http://tumblr.com/x9gp678mn

I think you can get it from here too: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/n...hi-o-ou-kodomo-film-teaser-posted

So. Time to make a new subject.

Seems to have a little inspiration from Castle in the Sky, doesn't it?

Hello to all Shinkai fans!

"Children who chase lost voices from deep below" seems more like a tagline of sorts to me.
Direct translation of the title is "Children Who Chase the Stars" so I guess that seems more appropriate.

The website also has a nice commentary written by Mr. Shinkai himself.
I'll try to translate it and post it here sometime during the day...

EDIT: There is also a hi-res version of the trailer on YouTube

Ok. So a rough translation of the text is here:

The conception of my recent movie, "Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo" goes back to a children story I read when I was going to elementary school. I was about ten years old at the time and the story really moved me because it was full of secrets of life and wonders of the world I had no idea about - like first love or the feeling of going on a journey together with friends. It was also full of mysterious concepts like taste of water or color of the air, or the fact that even the adults have worries. Or that there's a side to each of us we ourselves don't know about. That light and shadow, life and death, exist side by side in this world. It made me intellectually excited but it also made my chest hurt.

When I started working on this movie a year and half ago, I wrote down a bunch of keywords - "loss", "modern fantasy for young audience", "a girl turning into a woman", "a boy who lost his home", "a man who rationally decided not to believe reason", and so on. I think I made those to help myself and the staff throughout the long creative process, but the movie that we want you to see isn't just a strict reproduction of a set of pre-written keywords and outlines. We want you to experience the same deep emotions that moved us so much before. And I wanted to express that feeling in an anime movie for the young.

"Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo" is a story about a boy and a girl, embracing all kinds of happiness and sadness on their run through the vivid colorful world. It is the kind of movie I myself have always wanted to see so I hope as many of you as possible will feel the same. Please, look forward to the release.

    Makoto Shinkai, November 2010

EDIT: So I guess we're in for a treat despite of how awfully generic those mosters in the trailer look =).

So, is there a "Get Crunchyroll to release Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo on Bluray in the U.S." movement around yet?  (Assuming that Crunchroll is planning on handling future Shinkai releases...)

Wow, the teaser looks absolutely amazing. The landscapes are just fantastic again. Or as I read in another forum: "5 wallpapers per second"^^ And I like the Ghibliesque characters too.
This is gonna be a hard time waiting for the movie.

I agree, Zitch. I think Crunchyroll would be a great initial outlet for streaming.

I see this as a move forward for Shinkai. I still think the best is yet to come.

I agree. If I'm disappointed with anything it's rally the promotion of the film. Looks like they aren't really shooting for a global marketing strategy. From talking to some of the folks on the inside, it sounds like another company, other than CR is handling the promotion of the film.

Anyway ... Im still waiting for CR to release the updated 5 CM per second. We'll see what other kinds of indo we can get from CR folks or CoMix Wave.

Anyway ... I really liked the clip and can't wait to see more.

The Hoshi wo Ou Kodomo official site is getting lively again. Apart from information about acreening in various areas of Japan and merchandise shop, a character information section has appeared.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

ASUNA
A girl raised in the mountains. Because of living alone with her mother she is matue for her age, but also feels lonely.

SHUN/SHIN
When Shun met Asuna he understood the beauty of the world. He disappered afterwards. His younger brother Shin who comes later to pick up things Shun left behing then embarks with Asuna on a journey to meet his brother.

MORISAKI
A Japanese teacher who was transferred to Asuna's school. There is another face to this young teacher who lost his wife when he was young.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

While it didn't seem so from the trailer, the character design in these screenshots looks like it bears enough of Shinkai style not to be easily mistaken with Ghibli works. At least it seems so to me.

Quick news:

Looks like there will be a second batch of pre-sale tickets sold starting 12.3.
It will cost some 1000 JPY more than the first batch but the tickets will come with a 4GB flashdisk containing background images in .psd format, wallpaper images, background music with some kind of commentary by the voice actors and the teaser trailer in mp4.
