While watching again tonight .. I was watching the part in Story #2 where Takaki comments that he wonders when he started writing letters that he would never send. I hopped around a bit more between the stories and this is a nice thread that I hadn't noticed before.

Takaki takes a letter with him to visit Akari and he loses it. I'm assuming that it is a love letter or a letter expressing his feelings. Later we see Akari talking about how she remembered their first kiss after she had found a letter that she had written to give to him. I remembered in the first story, as Takaki leaves ... she realizes she had not given him the letter. Add to this the unsent text messages (I'm assuming they were to Akari ... if someone can read the Japanese on his cell phone ... were those texts to Akari?) and we see all these opportunitites for expression that pas by unfulfilled.

As beautiful as this movie is, I find it kind of frustrating. Both in Voices and A Place Promised, we see characters who, at some point, let their feelings be known. There is an expression or a shared understanding. In 5 CM, that unfulfilled aspect of Takaki and Akari's feelings really is a downer ... but a beautiful one Smile

I found that to be one of the things that I liked about Byousuko.
I am sure that most people in there life have had trouble communicating with a loved one and I find it adds a lot of humanity to the characters.

This struck a strong cord with me because it reflects what has happened to all of the friend ships I made in school. I have the means to contact all of my old friends but for some reason I don’t. Every once in a while I say “ I really must get together with bob and see how he is doing” but time passes and you forget about it. I have lost contact with even my closest friends from that time even though they live in the same town so I can easily imagine how you could lose contact when someone moves.

Also I belive that the reason that Akiri did not give the letter to Takaki is that she felt that their feelings where mutual. So the letter was not needed to tell him that she loved him.

I would like to know who the messages where from in the third part of the movie. The ones that he ignores.

I agree. More often than not, people tend to not express those kinds of sentiments. Personally, I know that I've written letters that I never sent and there's always some regret for that.

I get your point about Akari not giving the letter to Takaki as she probably felt it wasn't needed. Takaki even sounded positive in his monologue on his train ride back about being kind of overwhelmed with how the relationship was going to work ... but still feeling that somehow it would work out. I guess he just either didn't follow through. I still have a hard time with his indecision ... Akari and the girl in the second story made the decision along the way to move on ... Takaki doesn't seem to have made that.

I think the messages he was ignoring in the third story were from his most recent girlfriend. The girl in the office who is texting him. Even then ... he rejects her attempts at making contact. I kind of got the vibe from her that she was in a similar situation (lonely, etc.). Not sure if it was ever clear that they had broken up.

To be honest, I quite liked Takaki and Kanae to be together. Hell knows what happened to her... Sad

But I understand how Takaki felt, rejecting those mails from the new girl he was dating (I think her name is Mizuno - it was said in the office by one of her co-workers). You cannot forget about the sweet childhood with Akari even though he knew she had moved on. But then again, lingering back not moving on yourself while the world around you goes ahead is just like going backwards. You always need to find a way to move ahead. Anyway, I feel a bit sad for both Kanae and Mizuno, seems like they both are lonely without receiving some sort of understanding love from Takaki.

I think the girl in the third part is named "Risa". She is the one texting Takaki. She still loves him even though he is so distant to her.

I don't feel all that bad for Kanae, she's able to surf again and she makes her peace with the fact that Takaki won't reciprocate her feelings and moves on. She's the model for Takaki ... if he could just do that he'd have been much happier.

*** Fingers crossed that you get the DVD version soon ***

I see, and I agree with you Laz.

Does anyone have any idea of any kind at all when the DVD is coming out in Australian stores? I'm very desperate.

Another good question is when is the BluRay DVD coming out too Smile

Looks like April 18th in Japan, according to Daike (http://daike.hp.infoseek.co.jp/cgi-bin/newsboard/newsboard.cgi?Num=1). I guess I'll have to keep an eye out on Amazon for it.

Just a note on the other girl in Story #3.

The first three times I watched, for some reason I thought she was Akari. But then, in one of the voice actor's interviews they mentioned a character named Risa. In the dubbed version, the guy in the office calls her Risa, and in the subbed version he calls her Masuno. Then, I noticed in the credits under "additional voices" it listed "Risa Masuno" (did I spell the last name right?). So then, I had to watch it again to get the story straight.
