But also very musical, actually (see the smooth link to the thread there  Wink )

I've been listening to a lot of Jazz, of late; dipping my feet into the genre. Specifically starting off with John Coltrane, Miles Davis and trying to get into Sun Ra. Where's Fripod when you need reccomendations  Smile

Hey Maltos, jazz is a very diverse genre, and I think it is extremely unlikely that one could not find a sub-genre which is to their liking. If you're looking at getting into it, there are a few absolutely essential recordings which I would recommend.

Kind of Blue - Miles Davis
Take Five - The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Somethin Else - Cannonball Adderley
Any recordings of Charlie Parker
Giant Steps - John Coltrane.
Also try Kenny Burrell's Midnight Blue

The problem with pre 50's Jazz is that Long Play (LP) albums didn't exist, so most artists released only singles or EP's, meaning almost everything around today is a compilation album. Just figure out which artists you like, and then try and find as much of their material as you can.

You could also try looking on allmusic guide which has an overview of the many genres.

Thanks Fripod! Kind of Blue and Giant Steps were two of the first recordings I got hold of, and enjoyed them both very much!
I'll definately try and get those other essential recordings aswell.

allmusic also looks very helpful! Thanks again.

@Maltos,

A quick thought: See if you can hunt down also, Jazz Impressions of Japan by the Dave Brubeck Quartet (there should be a torrent available somewhere)

I highly recommend it in addition to the works I previously suggested, as an exquisite sonic portrait of Japan in the 1960's.

That it is... that it is... especially Paul Desmond's saxophone solo on The City is Crying, it's hard to believe he improvised it.

Hm... I am terrible at computers so posting links is beyond my level of understanding, sorry. All I can put down are a few of my favourites and leave it to you all to find them, if you are ever curious:

I Was Only 19 - Redgum
Holy Grail - Hunters and Collectors
Go West - Pet Shop Boys
Turn The Beat Around - Gloria Estefan
Shape of My Heart - Sting
Khe Sahn - Cold Chisel
and my all-time favourite: Fly - Celine Dion (mock away)

I've really loved The Antlers' album Hospice recently, this song is one of the best on there.
