I agree with what Laz just said.  Takaki has unfinished business with Risa.

That's a great concept. I can't believe I've never thought of this before.

Ei,
yes, the ending should have been made more clear.

yes this could indeed work, for us to understand that Takaki did finally move on...

Except, in my point of view...what better way to see that he moved on, that a after shot...he chatting or walking animatedly with Akari (and why not with her fiancť also), they stay friends (after all they had a beautiful past)... and after, another shot...he phones to Riza, and we se her Tears of Joy (cause he tells her that he's back for real).

That's my point of view...I believe that for a person forget a old (first) love, there as to be a confrontation/conversation (face to face), or else her ghost will always be near Wink

Hehe, this sounds fun.  I think I'll give it a try after I finish up another project that's kept me busy.  I've always thought about this, so I think I can come up with something good.  My friends like my writing style as it reminds them of this movie, and I'd also be able to share it with everyone on here to see if they'd like it.  The stuff I put up in my writing thread isn't all that recent.  The stuff I currently write is down to earth and vivid.

Hi. I'm new at this site. I saw the movie and read some resumes translated to english of the mr.Shinkai's novel that serialize the movie and I want to make an Epilogue in wich Akari and Takari living together because I think that can be very possible. I'm planning to develop my Epilog based mainly on what's was happened in Akari's life thos 15 years. There's not much info about that in the movie. In the movie the only thing we know is that he is going to be married with someone( One courious thing is that when Akari we can't see all his face in the movie) and he is apparently happy. And that he believed he would never see again Takaki (Wich is wrong, of course...)
I'm preparying on analisis about the movie and I would like all your opinions...

Well, I think that my main idea is she never really move on, the only thing she has do is seeking a man who protects her. We have to remember from the chapter 1 that Akari was a lonely girl, fragile who was unable to take her own decisions and who needs the protection.

I recognize I have readed the english summaries about the novel. And in the part of the movie when she finds the letter that she wrotes and travel to Tokyo is very emotive. She had forget Tataki and that letter makes  remember again her feelings...and how close was to him. Put one fragment really sad for me:
On the train where she was the only passenger, Akari couldnít concentrate on reading her book. She looks out at the plain fields of Iwafune and imagined it was laid with snow with small lights flickering in the night. She wondered what kind of sight Takaki saw when had been waiting on that train, hungry and filled with the guilt of making someone wait for him. Akari was sure he must have wished she went home being the kind boy he was.
Akari didnít mind waiting for him no matter how many hours it took. She had no doubt he would come that day and had really missed him. If only her voice could have reached him, she would have said:
ďDonít worry. Your loverís waiting for you. That girl knows you will come see her. You can relax. Think of the joy you will have when you two see each other again. It maybe the last time you meet but please, treasure that miraculous moment deep within your heart.ď

I though about this 4th chapter based on personal experience and a very close person history.

This ending changes the idea of moving on, but is not incompatible with the original anime and the idea that is present not just in Byousoku but also on other Makoto works. It keeps the sad melancholic felling of the majority of the anime.

Takaki meets Kanae (I like the convenience store situation). He thinks he moved on and Akari is past. He honestly look at Kanae with different yes, is touched by her love and decides to give both Kanae and himself a chance for happiness (there must be a reward for people who suffer alone for so long). But as time passes, even being together every night for a few months, he doesn't fell closer to her, actually he fells more and more distant and decides to break up so that she might have a chance to find someone who loves her as much as she loves him. Years go by, he always remember how good she was to him and regrets that he wasn't capable of loving her at that time. But people can't control who they love. Once she told him "it is always better for you to be with someone who loves you than to be with someone who you love". He doesn't love her but still misses her somehow.

Akari is married, with a good man that protects her (I agree with MacMardigan72). Their marriage is not perfect and sometimes she thinks about divorce. Just like that day on the train, she often remember of Takaki and of the time they spent together. Also, she often think of how her life could be if she had pursued that gentle boy who was her real true love. That explains why she ran away when they crossed each other on the train, she was just to afraid of: 1. giving up everything now for something so uncertain; 2. finding out that Takaki might have moved on or, even worst (like in the real case I'm based of) that Takaki doesn't treasure their past like she does and that he is not like in her memories.

I also think this ending reflects Makoto feelings somehow. He has several stories of people longing for their loved ones even after several years. I think he gave the anime and the manga the end he hopes to achieve, not the real one.
Let's see in the next anime if he can stop thinking about old loves...
