My Personal interpretation, would to say that you are all pretty much right. If you think about it, when are we definatly HAPPY about something or SAD about something, and those emotions alone? Usually at least, its a blend of emotion.
I say that At the very end He is not HAPPY, but rather just content. The text message from his most recent girlfriend and etc. shows hes not completely moved and and happy. I can relate to him FAR TOO WELL. I would without a doubt say that through to gap of their relationship/friendship Akari moving on with her life getting married, and him just living life his path that he is still not happy with how things ended up in the end but copes with it, even when its one of the hardest things to do. Shinkais stories are truly brilliant because they are an accurate slice of life, portrayed with great music and EXCELLENT ART.

As to the OP:

Of course he's not "happy" how could anyone be? practically spent 17 years of his life being a walking zombie, after all that time, at the age of 29 he finally realized that it just wasn't going to happen.

But hey at least he moved on, hopefully he finds some sort of happiness later on.

Well ... I see your point ... perhaps the better question is ... do you think he can move on? And I think the answer is yes.

I think being able to move on truly feels wonderful. Lingering back in the past not moving ahead in your life will probably mean you have a lot to regret later on. No one would want to finish their life with something they regret which they can never fix... it's just sad.

yeah i think he is able to move on. I've got a question though, is that the real akari in the ending or is that an illusion? It's hard to tell since she vanished kinda instantly and its a bit confusing. Thanks.

I don't think he knew if it was her but I think he turned around to check. They never met eye's so it's hard to assume he felt is was Akar, he had not seen her in a very very long time. But I don't think it mattered to him, I think he will at least get a job and start lifeing again.

I think it's safe to assume it's real since nothing was said or mentioned that it was a dream, as well it looked nothing like his usual dreams.
