Hello everybody, I am Sara, and I come from Taiwan. Recently, my friend told me the 5 cm/sec was a good movie. After watching, I have some thoughts and questions about this movie.
First, I think the author wanted to show somewhat expectation between the two leading characters. It seems that the author consigned his dream or his experience to this story, right?
Second, I feel there is a similar situation which had happened in my childhood. It was my friends’ situation. My friends who were teenagers did not know what love was, but they longed for love. In my junior high, my friends “always” had a dream to get together with their love, but they dare not send a letter to the one they loved with some complex reasons. This movie showed the similar situation.
Last, the music at the end of the movie is great! Although I do not know what it sing for, I was touched.

Hi Sara ... welcome to the Forums
I would guess that somewhere along the line Shinkai must have felt some of these emotions, since he portrays them so well in all of this movies ... longing, loss, love, regret (darn ... couldn't think of another "l" word) .. I'll look for some of the interview links and add them in this thread.
I think the beauty of these movies is that they are so easy to connect to or to see yourself in the characters. I can see myself, or friends or moments in each of the movies and it's spot on. I guess that's what got us all to look for others with the same feelings about Shinkai's films
That song is awesome .. definitely check out the various versions on YouTube.

Hello Sara.
Very true what you said. Many teenagers long for a loving relationship with someone but don't actually know what love really is. It's amazing what an animation can show you.
Oh, and welcome aboard. |

Hello, Sara, I comes from China.
It is true that many people like this movie because they can find themselves in it. And So do I. Of course, There are still many reasons why I like this movie.
I can tell you, as the author said in the interview, the story of the movie is not his experience. He just wanted to describe and express. By the way, the author's name is Makoto Shinkai, 新海诚,may be you know it, I think.
At last, If you want to learn more about this movie and other works of this author, you may come here http://www.shinkai.cn/ a Chinese website of Shinkai.(Forgive me, just a small ad...) |

I enter the link from Fripod's reply, and I know more about the song, "One More Time, One More Chance." I love it!
"If I just wanted to avoid loneliness, anybody would have been enough.
Because the night looks like the stars will fall, I cannot lie to myself.
One more time, oh seasons, fade not.
One more time, when we were messing around
I’m always searching, for your figure to appear somewhere
At a street crossing, in the midst of dreams
Even though I know you couldn’t be at such a place
If a miracle were to happen here, I would show you right away
The new morning, who I’ll be from now on
And the words I never said: “I love you.”"

this part of the song touches me, and it also restates the story again.
By the way, I want to share a Japaness singer, Kenhirai

His voice also touch me. |

He has a nice singing voice. There aren't too many male singers left who'll sing falsetto like that.
