I definately feel that Takaki is happy in the end.
Following part 3 in chronological order; it starts with Takaki having a boring desk job with an unsatifactory daily life and a girlfriend he can't 'connect' with.
Though after he quits his job things start looking up for him. Although it appears he breaks up with Risa [his girlfriend] it sort of signals a new start to his life.
It shows him working from home now and he appears to be more happy. Even after his momentary meeting with Akari, his smile shows us that he's moved on with his life now and the falling of the cherry blossoms sort of brings the story back round to the beginning again. They got to see the cherry blossoms again but the big difference is that over time they've moved apart; which is the what the title of the film relates to.
That's how i like to interprit the film. It brings a happy ending to what appears to be a very sad film. Never the less; this film still makes me sad, hahah.
I agree with you on where he ends up at the end, but in my opinion that comes as a result of the chance meeting. I don't think he's doing better when he quits his job . I think he's slowly giving up on things and heading into despair.
It's a good kind of sadness though, isn't it?

I see what you mean. But i think as things were building up and 'heading into despair'; quitting his job was like the last straw. I think when he started working from home that's when things started to turn around. His room looks more tidy and organised now, instead of having empty cans scattered around. And anothing thing to note is that when he walks past the big sakura tree he smiles.
I think that the final meeting was like a big relief for him; and i suppose that was when he really had closure on their promise and he could start pulling his life back together.
I see what you're saying. Yup ..I get that sense that at the end Takaki has made the turn he needs to make and can finally move on (or I truly hope he does) ^-^

If you saying THE END.. that part, he finally understand 1 thing. (Ask Takaki for comfirmation lmfao) .. and that thing will be something that will affect his future.. He smiled.. so i supposed he understand and he will live his life to the fullest? or he wish Akari happiness..
That's difficult to answer.
I'd like to say, "Yes of course, he knows that he needs to move on, after all."
But what good is saying that? --- even if I knew that to make life easier, I would have to let go of someone precious, I don't think I would be able to make that sacrifice. Is the memory worth sacrificing?
Unfortunately, to be able to gain most anything in this world, I think something, perhaps of equal value, must be given in return. An equivalent, exchange, if you will.
I don't think Takaki could move on even if he tried --- he loves her far too much for his own good.
First loves can be like that. _________________ ~ Even the smallest candle can banish a little darkness ~
