I've been learning Japanese via a few books I bought and I just got an Essential Kanji book to start digging into. I want to get the 5CM novel and be able to read it in the original.

As for magazines, I've been trying to find a substitute for Newtype USA (I started reading it late in the game, so it was a short-lived experience). I've looked at the two recent issues of PiQ but wasn't too thrilled with them. Not just because they lacked the extras, but with the additional media coverage it seemed that the articles had shrunk a bit, leaving me a little dissatisfied.
I picked up a copy of Anime Insider and really liked it. But I'll have to test-drive it a few more times to be sure.
How about some recommendations for Manga ? I'm going to be headed to Otakon and will be making many trips to the dealers area looking for deals on Manga ... what are some of your "must have's" ?

I don't mean to dominate the discussion here, but I thought I'd make mention of another series I'm currently reading. It's the Aqua/Aria series, a very layed-back slice-of-life story, where nothing really happens but it's still kind of fun to read. Here's a little run-down of the characters that has me going "Hmmm..."
Aqua, the planet formerly known as Mars
Aria, a gondola company on Aqua, as well as its president's (a Martian cat) name
Akari, a girl who is training at Aria Company to become a gondolier
Alicia, another girl at Aria and a full-fledged gondolier
Ai, a girl who is training at another gondola company on Aqua
Akatsuki, a guy-friend of Akari's who works for the weather-control system on Aqua
Akatsuki's older brother, not named yet, but I can only guess
and finally...
Amano Kozue, the creator of the series
I hope I haven't given away too much of the story.
I'm currently reading Code: Breaker, Biomega, Special A, Katekyo Hitman Reborn! and Eternal Sabbath (More like re-reading, really) The last manga is seinen, but it's pretty good, it has kept me hooked since chapter 2. _________________ Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.
I haven't read any manga for months as I'm concentrated on Raymond E Feist's Midkemia series.
Very very intriguing fantasy. I even went out and bought the next book today just because it wasn't in my local library.
