I finally got a chance to throw this into the DVD player tonight. I usually watch the Dub but tonight I decided to watch the Sub instead.
Even though I love the scenery in this movie and I really like the characters and love several scenes, this is my least favorite of Shinkai-sensei's films. I get the feeling that this is more of a mainstream film than the others, as well. I do think the plot is probably more complex than the others, but I don't see that as a detractor at all.
Some of my favorite parts include the scenes of the boys and Sayuri working on the airplane ... think some of the backgrounds are breath taking. I loved the symbolism of having the tower in the background at times, when Hiroki is looking at Sayuri ... as if to suggest that she, not necessarily the tower was the object of Hiroki's longing.
I like that the film has a positive ending and another positive message. don't feel that it pulls at my emotions quite like the other films though.
I hadn't realized it before but there are tons of trains in this film
Favorite scenes ..
1. When Hiroki and Sayuri touch hands in the hospital room and they're transported back to the old station where the plan was being built ... the colors and the scenery is amazing.
2. All 3 characters are sitting near the wooden structure near the old station and they are talking. There are clouds off in the distance, and if you pay attention you see that there is lightening occuring in the clouds.
3. This is a quick scene but the level of detail is truly awesome. In one of the train scenes ... we se a shot of the floor of the train and we see the light shining on the floor, at intervals as the train passes objects outside. Its a small thing, but it looks real. There's a scene of the school and I had to pause the film to take a closer look because it looked so real.
Anyway ... definitely check this out if you haven't already (though if you've read this far and haven't seen it yet, I might have spoiled a few things for you).
i think that this is the best looking movie he has made so far. byousuko has better animating but i prefer what was animated in kumo no mukou. the rolling fields and clouds in this movie are perfect. i think it has the best music as well Sayuri's melody ( the song sayuri plays on the violin) is one of my favorites and i can play it on my $24.95 violin from ebay. but i think the best one is the battle begins( no prizes for guessing when that one plays in the movie)
i think the movie would have been better without the "action scenes." but i suppose it increases the target audience. i found it a really hard to follow
the story line with the subs first time i watched it probably because as laz said it is more complicated than the others.

not my favorite makoto movie but i still love it to bits.
I think the sky scenes and the clouds and the landscapes are amazing. I tend to think the color in 5 CM "pops" a little more ... like the pink of the cherry blossoms, but the scenery in Place Promised is amazing.
What do you think of the look/feel of the characters ? It's definitely not as angular (for lack of a better word) than Voices.
To me, Place Promised was the only movie by Shinkai to truly devastate me. More so than She and Her Cat and Voices of a Distant Star. When I first watched Place Promised, I, like Laz, wasn't sure what to make of it. I ended up watching the movie three more times in that week because something about it was bothering me.
The morning after watching the movie for the fourth time (A full ten hours after watching the movie), I'm not fully sure what hit me, but I ended up curled in a ball crying my eyes out. Something about how the friends broke apart and the broken promise between them strongly resonated. I really should try to write a full analysis of the movie (one of the anime bloggers I read said he ended writing a 12-page analysis of the movie and was in the process of editing it down, but he never released it publically. I should prompt him on that.)
As a side note, from what I understand, Shinkai only had a hand in the initial character designs, but he's kept his main animating work of the background. He left the character animations to the team that formed up for him.
I thin the more I watch this film the more it grows on me and the more I pick up on. It seems more subtle to me than the others. The friendship break up and then re-formation, the feelings between Sayuri and Hiroki.
The fulfillment of the promise and the resolution to start a new, definitely resonates and strikes a chord similar to the other movies.
i found that too first time i saw it i thought "dam, was that it" then i watched it again and picked more up and started to like it more.
after i watched it a number of times i went into perth city on the train. about half way along the track there is an old abandoned wheat silo. it looks almost identical to one of the buildings in kumo no muko, the large shed that sayuri walks past the first time she has her dream. it also looks similar to the shed the boys are making the plane in. i had never noticed it before but that day it suddenly stood out. interestingly there where low altitude clouds that looked similar to makotos in the background. it was so similar to the movie, i was quite shocked. all of the emotions of the movie came back like i was watching it again.
has this happened to anyone else. have you seen something that reminds you of a makoto movie.
That's a great question ...I'm going to have to be more aware of things in my day to day life. Hopefully I'll catch a glimpse of the shinkai vision in the real world.
I loved it, had the most of a story out of any of his works and he tied the drama into the sci-fi/slice of life nicely.
I forgot the main characters names oh my! But I enjoyed how the guy would rather live in reality even though it was not going to be a fairy tail. Then in the fairy tale of the dream.
Hard to follow at times, maybe so, but IMO you shouldn't think about "that" stuff too much, but instead about the 3 friends, about how Hiroki had been practically haunted by Sayuri during those 3 years, about how they risked it all to help their dear friend/lover and how finally after going through so much they were reunited, and at the same time(hopefully) made the world a better place.
Yeah she lost her dear memories, but now that they can actually be together, they can start anew and make many new memories, and promises.
