I've become more of a Noboru fan every time I watch this film. To see how he deals with the loss of Mikako ... and in the end how he resolves to take control of his life and works to go after what he wants. Despite time and space, his feelings remain true and he accepts them and is comfortable with them. He no longer wants to make himself cold.
I like the music a lot as well. The simple piano and the variations on that theme keep a nice pace to the story and the story telling. I noticed the quick montage when Mikako has her revelation on Agartha ... never really noticed that before. I always think that the video images that are on the cover of the newspapers and magazine would be a very cool idea
I was struck by how vibrant the colors are in the scene after they wait out the rain in the bus stop near the convenience store ... the red and the sky after the rain is really the first time you get hit with that much color in the film.
And as always ..I love the ending line ... koko ni iru yo.

Something I noticed for the first time after watching this again.
I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but the words "I am here" were actually in the subject line of Mikako's last email to Noboru. That must be why it became the one thought that they knew they could both share. Perhaps she used it in the subject line to reassure him that she was still alive. In previous messages, she had used "It's Mikako."
Just another little piece of trivia to add to the file.
You're right Laz, Noboru, like we say in Portugal:"Apanha o touro pelos cornos", (catch the bull by the horns), I mean, take control of his life...(like Takaki,should...here I go again ).
I saw this movie, this morning...before work (my shop is in my house,so...)...what I nice way to start the day
I like when he say´s "...I'm weak and when te messages arrive I'm weaker...", I think everyone felt like this, in a moment...
I´m looking for the manga version, that goes further in the history...

Ok, this is the point. Yesterday I bought the italian DVD of this work. This is the only Makoto Shinkai's work that we can find in Italian, better then finding no one, right?
Anyway, I think that Makoto said so many things in only 25 minutes, it is wonderful, another masterpiece.
From the point of view of characters' feelings, this work is very intense. I like their relationship, how they realize their feelings and how they react to the spacial and temporal distance (the same subject that we can find in 5 cm). Of course this is the main plot, but I liked a lot also the mecha and aliens haunting subplot. You know, I'm a sci-fi fan and I find this subplot very interesting and a starting point for a very good story.
The drawings are less accurate then in other works, but they are always very good.
Music....have I to say something? It is Tenmon, there's no "One more time" but it works very well the same.
Last point, the DVD has "La voce delle stelle" (Voices of a distant star), "Lei e il suo gatto" (She and her cat), an interview with Makoto Shinkai, several audio traces (also the one where is Makoto and his girlfriend that dub the voices) and a little book with drawings and explainations. Cost: 19,50€
I think it is good for a Makoto Shinkai work
Ei, excellent buy...here (Portugal, english or nothing)

I agree with everything, I read somewhere that Makoto is a big fan of sci-fi, and the 5CM is the one work that he don´t use sci-fi (he touch´s slight(??) when we saw the ship, act 2, and act 3 newspaper...)
I prefer Noboru rather than Takaki, he moved on... _________________

Well, I think we can say that Noboru is a little less pathetic then Takaki. Infact he reacts faster to the events and tries to have a normal life accepting the fact that his love is far away from him. But I find also Takaki's behaviour very honest and realistic.
But I have a question, near the end of the movie we discover that also Noboru has joined the army. Are we sure that it is a free decision, or it is just a desperate try to have more chances to meet again Mikako?
P.S. I see you solved your problems with the avatar, great choise
"...or it is just a desperate try to have more chances to meet again Mikako?...(Gian), I hope not, it should be woman chasing men... .
Maybe in the manga, they show... _________________

With Noboru, I think we get to see the change that we wish we could see in Takaki. Noboru gets his act together and sets a goal and achieves it ... to be with Mikako or at least to try. In that sense he is a stronger character ... he goes into dispair and comes out the other side changed and resolute. We only get to see the glimpse of that from Takaki, at the very end of 5 CM.
Next Year's Glboal Shinkai Day will have a VoaDS theme ... "We are here"
