Hello, I am come from Taiwan. I am Feng and also an animation fan. I very like the film- Byousoku 5cm because I am really touched by this film. I still have some question about the film although I have seen it three times.
Firstly, what’s role the bird plays in film?
Secondly, what’s the metaphor for Byousoku 5cm or Speed of 5 Centimeters per Second.
Thirdly, I think that Touno Takaki finally knows that he really loves Shinohara Akari because she let him realize the mean of the eternity, soul and spirit. The thought is right?
I noticed that as well ... at points where there is an intro our outro of a scene or section, the film will focus on the birds or a bird and take you into the story or out of the story. They seem to take your attention from the sky/heavens back down to earth (the story) and then back again at the end of the sections. Just kind of a device for taking you into and out of the story .. just my opinion.
Akari states in the first section that 5 CM per second is the speed at which sakura petals fall. The sakura trees play significant part in the first and third stories. The distance, the passage of time, the changes that will impact Akari and Takaki's relationship ... time passes and moves on ... do people? If you notice, in each section there is a mention of a distance or a speed .. in the second story, it is the speed at which the train carries the rocket parts and in the third section 1 cm is used to relate how close Risa and Takaki's hearts grew together despite tons of emails/texts. The sub title of the film is "A chain of short stories about their distance" and I really think he uses those distance statements/metaphors to define the growth or lack there of, of Takaki in each. Again, just my opinion.
I think at the end he comes to terms with his inability to express himself and maybe the doubt or regret he has about Akari. I think we all just hope that in the end Takaki can move on with his life and be happy.
Great questions! What do you think?

One observation on the speed of falling cherry blossoms...
Remember from physics class (if you didn't fall asleep there) how two objects dropped together fall at the same rate? If one cherry blossom (Akari) falls ahead of another (Takaki), it is impossible for them to meet again in mid-air. They are falling at the same speed, separated by some distance. It's just a fact of nature.
Well ... they would only technically fall at the same speed in a vacuum where there would be no other external forces on them, like air or wind or anything.
Two leaves could fall at completely different rates if there is external forces (like one moving out of Tokyo, one not being able to let go of ones feelings, etc.)
My Physics Minor came in handy after all

It amazes me when I remember stuff like that from college
I love the sakura imagery in 5 CM ... from the full bloom of their childhood memories to the kiss under the bare tree in the snow, to the full bloom again when they cross on the train tracks at the end ... awesome

So you did stay awake.
I remember reading the whole article that Zitch linked to, and I was shocked to learn that it was just a paper for a college class. It sounded more like something that should have been published in a major magazine.
