Regarding Hiroki's theme, the obvious difference from Sayuri's is the level of maturity in the playing. Also, Hiroki has had more time than Sayuri to do some soul-searching, something which comes out in the playing, as well.

"Kanae's Feelings" comes in early on, when she still has hope of sharing them with Takaki. The other theme comes at the end of the story, where she has resigned herself with sadness to the fact that Takaki would never feel the same.

That's my take, anyway.

I noticed at the end of Place Promised, in the credits ... there were like 5 people who got violin playing credits. At that point it kinds of hit me that those two themes were similar yet unique. I'm not musical at all so I just attributed the difference to the different people playing. I did let the DVD play for a long time on the loop of the violin theme and I could've listened to it all night. Very simple and very beautiful.

Thanks for illustrating the finer points.

Laz

That violin theme is echoed in his other work, Lost Empire Saga. I'm not sure which came first.

Just a heads up...

I noticed that Rightstuf.com has Voices of a Distant Star CD Soundtrack in their Bargain Bin for $4.00. Unfortunately, it's only good through December 7. No other Shinkai stuff, though.

I finally managed to find the Byousoku 5cm soundtrack. I might sleep tonight with the music softly playing. Smile

i have had very little luck trying to find any CDs from tenmon other than 5cm which i picked up in hong kong. apparently voices and kumo no mukou are out of stock pretty much every where and are very hard to get.

on a lighter note i can play sayuri's melody on the violin or the guitar Razz kumo no mukou inspired me to start the violin.... its a pity i suck Sad

also, if you watch EF a tale of memories you will hear a lot of tenmon stuff, and quite a few bits of songs you will recognize.

once i am decent at the violin (IE in the distant future) im going to learn the piano so i can play the voices sound track and end theme from 5cm.

Where have you been emh?! It's been a while! Razz

I'm sure you're not that bad in violin. Just keep practising and eventually you'll get the hang of it. Well that goes for almost everything anyway. Razz I'd love to hear you play in the future.
