While working on the home page, I got interested in computer code. You know, like HTML, CSS, Javascript, XML, etc. Well, in the process of trying to learn these things, I came across one of the newer codes for building web applications, Ruby on Rails. It seems pretty popular with web developers these days (I'm light-years away from becoming one of those).
There are books on Ruby which teach you how to use it, but one online book in particular takes a totally different approach. It's called "Why's (poignant) Guide to Ruby." It teaches the programming language Ruby, which you need to know to use Ruby on Rails (I haven't even dared to start). So, whether you're into code or not, it's still fun to read. Strange, too. It's even got cartoons. You may only read a few pages and give up, but check it out. It's even got a soundtrack and t-shirts, too.

Ruby on Rails is pretty cool. I dabbled in it a little while back and I've got a few friends who develop in it. I've seen some really slick apps created with RoR.

Yesterday, I finished reading Fruits Basket #23, the last volume in the series.
Fruits Basket #1 was the first manga I ever read, and that was about 2 years ago. Finishing the last volume was, to say the least, quite emotional for me. It was almost like completing a long journey, reaching the end(?) of the story of Tohru Honda and her friends. And it was a beautiful ending, I might add.
So, now it's a new frontier for me in the manga world. I'll now have to move on to some other titles. Thank you, Tohru. Thank you, Natsuki Takaya. _________________

Perhaps a little unorthodox, given the community of this site, but I have recently been reading:
'The Cash Nexus' by Harvard historian Professor Niall Ferguson.
The book sets out to examine the relationship between power and money in the modern world (1700-2000) and I have found it to be most fascinating. |

I have been a good it of manga reading lately ...
1. Initial D - I know it's old but it's good and it's fast. You can click through a bunch of chapters due to the car races taking up most of the story line. I like the way they explain racing tactics and info about the cars. Surprisingly good.
2. Saint Young Men - I saw some adds for this in a book shop in Japan. What do you get when Jesus and Buddha decide to hang out in Japan? You get this manga
3. Otaku no Masumune - An otaku dad has to take care of his daughter that he never knew he had. Hilarity ensues. I like the characters and the story is funny.
4. Monster - From the author of 20th Century Boys ... I'm only 9 chapters into this one ... looks promising.
5. Bartender - This is coming out little by little but still an interesting story. Who ever knew that the way you stir ice in a drink was so important
6. Umi No Misaki - Another one that comes out a little at a time. Stll like the story and the characters. A bit of a harem story ..but its good.
7. Mysterious Girlfriend - Still interesting ... takes forever to come with a new chapter thought
8. Bakuman- Still very good story of two high school kids who become mangakas. Check it out.
9. Change 123 - A little ecchi and a harem, but what's wrong with that? ha ha
And of course ... Naruto and Bleach.
Anyone have any other suggestions for good manga?
Laz

I read a good graphic novel yesterday called Low Moon, from an author I'm not familiar with. It was a good collection of dry, bizarre short stories. My favorite was about a Wild West town where outlaws challenge the sherrif to playing chess rather than duels.

This goes to show just how desperate manga fans can be, and how stupid I can be sometimes. I saw that Just Manga had advanced copies of Yotsuba #1 thru #6 in stock, but I had to wait a couple of days before I could order. Today I went to look, and they were all BACKORDERED!!!
Darn procrastination! Now I have to wait another two weeks!
