Hey folks,

I went down to the Washington DC area for a night at Anime USA. I like this con because the Hotel in which it is held is a little small and the crowd for this con is just right for the size.

The dealer room was ok ... nothing really there that I was interested in buying. It seemed like there was fewer dealers than in the past. Perhaps thats a result of the economy. The first panel I went to was the Funimation Panel. This was basically a review of the anime that they were going to be putting out. Of the anime they mentioned they had the license for Sekirei. Sekirei is a harem anime and it's a little ecchi at times but not over the top and the characters are decent.

I saw the live action movie "Ong Bak" ... this film is awesome .... non-stop Thai fight scenes and chase scenes ... strung together. I guess it's been out for a while but I hadn't seen it before.

I went to the video game room and watched some Tekken 6 and Guitar Hero. We went to the Masquerade and saw some funny skits and some really good Cosplay. I saw an amazing Welkin Gunther from Valkyria Chronicles .. the costume was really good. There were two girls that won the best in show who had amazing Oh My Goddess outfits. Anyone who does cosplay and enters a masquerade ... I give you tons of credit.

One of the best panels I went to was titled "Amazingly Obscure Anime". The guys who did this panel did a really good job with their content and they were very knowledgeable of the shows. The focused on some of the more rarer or obscure things out there with not much regard to if the shows were good or not. Though they did recommend most of what they presented. I hadn't seen any of these other than Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou Smile

The list of obscure anime they presented was ...

Licensed:

Animation Runner Kuromi
Boogiepop Phantom
Catnapped
Clockwork Fighters: Hiwou's War
Infinite Ryvius
Mighty Space miners
Sky Blue (Wonderful days)
Spring and Chaos
Tsukikage Ran
Urusei Yatsura the Movie2: Beautiful Dreamers

Unlicensed:

Bokura ga Ita
Brave Story
Future Boy Conan
Franz Kafkas A Country Doctor
Oseam
Genuis Party
Invincible Superman Zambot 3
Kemonozume
Mind Game
Pale Cocoon
Space Runaway Ideon
Tokyo Marble Chocolate

Has anyone seen any of these?

We ran into some of the folks who run the Video Game Room for the con and they had a Raman Eating contest ... so ... having just eaten dinner and had 2 large Asahi's ... I was talked into entering Smile Out of about 10 people ... to qualify they took the top 5 fastest people to finish one Cup of Noodles. I qualified. We then had to eat 5 Cup of noodles and the fastest one to eat won the contest. Well ... I won Smile ha ha ha I almost threw up on Cup #4 ... when i switched from 3 Chickens to Beef. Ugggh. After my win ..I quickly headed to the bathroom where I deposited that Raman Smile

After the Ramen contest we poked around a few different panels which were mostly 18+ ... we stayed up till about 3 am and then crashed. The fun things about Cons are just the random things that happen ... like that Ramen Eating contest.

Yeah, I like small cons, too. I went to Dragoncon in Atlanta for two years, but it just got too big.

A few of those anime are currently on Crunchyroll. The only one I've seen is Pale Cocoon. It's about as short as Voices. Great one.

Laz, you're a brave man. Hope the prize was worth it. Very Happy

Sounded like fun.  Yeah, I've seen quite a few of these, actually:

Infinite Ryvius - What I consider an "A" level series.  I remember it described as Lord of the Flies combined with The Hunt for Red October with something else I forgot....  IN SPAAACE!  In reality, I found it a great series that featured one of the largest casts I've seen in anime (I think there were something like 32 or so major roles?  Though the series really concentrates on around 10 of them).

Tsukikage Ran - Just saw this recently!  I think it's out of print or something (Media Blaster had a boxset for sale around Christmas 2004, and then stopped).  Rather light and amusing samurai series.  The main characters are a female samurai who's pretty much an alcoholic (I made references elsewhere about not getting between a samurai and her sake, I think) and a loud-mouth chinese martial artist.  Fight scenes are greatly animated too.  This is on my long-list to buy, but as I said, it might be hard to pick this up for a good price.

Genuis Party - An collection of 14 short animations produced by Studio 4C by various directors and artists.  The shorts themselves range from "WTF?" to "this fucking rocks!".  Recommended just for the varying range of animation and presentation styles.

Kemonozume - This one was kind of strange.  Made in an almost similar style to Mind Game, this featured a love story between some female monster and a samurai who was part of a clan that whose missions was to kill those monsters.  Rather violent, sometimes surreal, I'm just not sure if it works out well, though.

Mind Game - This is a trippy and awesome "coming of age" story; this was one of the few movies I went out of my way to pick up the R2 DVD for (which does have English subtitles on it too!).  In truth, I'm not sure how to really describe it; It's about a guy, the girl he has a crush on, and her sister who get in trouble with a yakuza gang and escapes by getting swallowed up by a whale.   Yeah...

Pale Cocoon - Another movie I picked up the R2 DVD for; this was a solo animation work by Yasuhiro Yoshiura (like Shinkai did in Voices of a Distant Star).  He later created the excellent Time of Eve series.  Pale Cocoon is much darker though; featuring a claustrophobic feel and a nice little twist (which is only revealed at the end), this movie showcased what Yoshiura can do with limited resources.
