I know it's a little early with just one trailer out but anyway I thought it might be the best time to start speculating about what kind of movie is it going be and how much we're going to like it and thus making our wait a little shorter.

My impressions of the teaser:

- The Art: looks like Shinkai is going to look better than ever. I can't wait to immerse myself in another of his dazzling worlds.

- The Characters. Everybody on the net is pointing out that the Shinkai characters look like Miyazaki's. At first I thought that the change of character design is a recent news but then I rewatched Neko no Shuukai and realized that the characters looked totally Ghibli-ish even then. Since Kodomo is going to be a fantasy-adventure story and Neko no Shuukai is, well, heartwarming funny little thing, the "ghiblifying" of characters goes hand in hand with (expected) change of the nature of the story from introspection to adventure.

The resemblance of Shinkai's new hero and Arren from Ghibli's Tales of the Earthsea.

- The Fantasy - Kodomo is going to be a "modern fantasy for the young". So we may expect some fighting monsters and things like that. The monsters are exactly the thing I'm little afraid of because from the little we have seen the monsters look awfully generic and unimaginative so I hope we won't be seeing too much of them.

- The Music - I have two syllables for you: TEN-MON. There's nothing more to say I believe.

Overall I'm really excited about the new movie and I'm sure that Shinkai will show how much has he grown as a director. I believe he can't do any better at the introspective (or poetic) movies áthan the 5cm (which I believe is the perfect synthesis of image, music and narration known to man =)) so let's see how good is he going to do at adventure. Maybe the voices calling him "the new Miyazaki" will finally be justified.

I guess that was one of my concerns, that people started calling him the next Miyazaki so maybe he felt like the had to really look like a ghibili style film to get noticed. I think the cat looks just like the squirrel critter from Nausicaa. It's almost too similar ... but with the Ghibili folks on staff helping out, I'm sure there was some influence there. Shinkai definitely did the main character designs ... so he set the precedent for their appearance so ... who knows. I guess my big fear is watching the film and thinking ... that was a good Ghibli movie.

Anyway ... we'll find out won't we Smile ha ha ha

i watched the trailer about four times without subs then when someone posted them, i started really to focus in it.
ofcourse first thing that seized my attention was tenmon's music, he is and will be one of the top reasons why the shinkai movies touch my heart so. ^^

i didn't see the monsters until someone pointed them out, now that i see them, they look hilarious! of course nobody should expect a death note monster or something but, i think as much diligent animation and character design there is in all shinkai movies, these monsters won't just be mistaken as terrifying. hopefully something's out of them.

can't wait to see more.  Smile
That would really be...a journey so dark and lonely as to be beyond all imagination...

The one thing that I notice from the full trailer is how many different things are running around at once. So many different scenes and events and storylines happening in this film, that I feel that it might be over-loaded, over-whelmed with all the elements in it.
This movie had better be long. I mean, "Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya" long, and it's going to have to be smooth, without hiccups like what happened with "The Place Promised in Our Early Days".
I don't doubt that Shinkai is a great director, but I sure hope that he doesn't mess up this film, and that it ends up being a movie that's more like: "I liked this part, I hated the next ten minutes, then loved the next few scenes, and then the next scene just lost me..."- kind of deal. Inconsistent, I guess is the word I'm looking for.

I really hope that he's got it good, or else we could be in for the longest prettiest scenery and sound film ever.

I really hope that this is good, because I will one of the first to watch it once it becomes available in North America.
