So, I was sitting on the couch last evening, wondering what to pop into the old DVD player; anime-wise, that is. Well, after it got kind of late, and I hadn't chosen anything to watch, I got to thinking about how long I've been into this anime stuff in general, and Shinkai in particular. I knew I must have started sometime in 2007, when I happened upon a free satellite feed of the Funimation channel and got hooked on Fruits Basket, Kodocha and Revolutionary Girl: Utena. So I went digging through a box of old bills, receipts, bank statements, etc. and found that my first anime spending had been on rentals from Anime Takeout in Spring 2007; then, I had my first purchase from JustManga listed in May of that year (don't remember what it was).

After doing a little more digging, I found the packing lists for the three Shinkai films. The first was from JustManga, dated 09/26/2007, which showed that I'd bought the Place Promised DVD and the Voices manga; I remembered thinking at that time that I was ordering the Voices DVD, not realizing until later that I'd gotten the manga instead, which I then laid aside and didn't read till much later. Back then, I always got a thrill from finding that blue and white Priority Mail package in my mailbox, with the smell of Japanese candy that JustManga would include as a gift. Like a kid getting a new toy, I'd go "Yay!" upon opening the mailbox and spotting it after days of waiting.

After watching and loving Place Promised, I went searching for the Voices DVD. No one had it at that time but Amazon, so that order occurred on October 02, 2007. I also found the packing list from Right Stuf for 5 Centimeters, dated 04/01/08. I remember popping the DVD in that evening and being left speechless afterwards, just sitting there for several minutes staring at the menu on the screen and listening to the loop of Tenmon's music.

I guess all this nostalgic musing seems trivial at this point, as my interest in anime/manga has already started to wane. There are only a few titles now that I'm looking forward to seeing, but after that I don't know. As a result, y'all might not see me around here that much in the future. I'll be around alright, but not as visible as before. I just wanted to share this little trip down memory lane with y'all, since it got me in such a reflective mood. Heck, it beat having to wade through all those spam posts to find anything decent to read, didn't it?
