i'm now watching one of the Q&A at otakon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrB6Of30LWs
i'm definitely gaining more and more respect for the movie now, i can't believe i had doubts about it, i'm realizing stuff better now, but i still think that the heart-warming themes like, as he said, the main theme of traveling and realizing the beauty of ur own world, had been much swept away in the middle of the other themes...and the dark themes (reviving one from the dead, what happened to sensei's eye, that weird dream again) being few, they felt a bit inconsistent with the rest.
i'm also still a bit skeptic around the whole reason Asuna had to go through the journey, was it to get over Shun (i don't think it's that big of a reason since her relationship with Shun was hardly developed) or to move on, or because she felt lonely, or to find herself???
i love the new insights about 5 cm though.
and wow, he got his first cell around 2002 when voices of a distant star was conceived, that's awkward, but again maybe it's normal in japan Confused

SPOILER ALERT Smile

Good questions ....

I think Asuna went on the Journey because she was lonely. Her mother was pretty much not around and her father had passed away. She had the clavis and it allowed her a certain access to Agarta and she figured, why not go there. The Journey got her to realize what she had at home and to appreciate that. All of those folks were on a journey, different journeys but they were all searching for something.

Shun is the mirror reflection of Asuna ... she wanted to escape the upper world and go on adventure and Shun wanted to escape Agartha and see the top side world. Probably a lot like Asuna's father. Agartha is slowly wasting away ... you can see how someone with an adventurous streak might not want to just sit and be satisfied with living in that kind of place.

As for Asuna's father being from Agartha, its very subtle .. we never really kow how she got the clavis at the start but then we find out that it was given to her by her father so you add it up and the only way he would have a clavis is if he was from Argartha or had at least visited there.

I think she gained peace of mind from her journey, to realize why you are running and what you are running away from is a form of enlightenment and understanding. She could return home to her mother and her life and be satisfied. Did you watch the credits all the way through ... there are some scenes that kind of wrap things up while the credits are rolling. I agree ... i think with a few tweaks it could have been really good, but I still think it was a good evolution from the previous films.

What did you think about Mimi's passing away? I thought that it was a very moving part of the film, very beautifully represented.

Smile

I wanna watch it again Smile .....

for the father thing again, i think he's from Agartha not just passed by it, because they did say that  she had defiled blood, it wouldn't be so if her father was not from Agartha orginally.

and again the scarf thing, okay let's take this slow, Shun had Asuna's scarf (she covered his arm wound with it) and her mum said that she knew the boy who died (Shun) was Asuna's friend because of the scarf thing, but Asuna didn't have the scarf when she went to Agartha, sooooooo how in the world could Shin have in the end (in the credits) the scarf aound his arm, and hiding it when sensei saw it...huh?!
there's lots of stuff that can be understood better about Agartha from watching it again, the thing that swallowed them, the whole Agartha is slowly decaying for a reason we don't know (or i couldn't quite make it out)...i'll just be watching it when i have a chance

Everything put aside, Mimi's farewell was in my opinion the Shinkai-ish touch (if most of the movie can be said to have a Miyazaki/Ghibli-ish touch)...and Tenmon's track Mimi to no Wakare simply framed it in perfection. My favourite track, my no. one favourite scene...it was brilliant, hands down.
my other favourite scene would also have to be when she was walking in the water with the izoku (again i'm not very good with names) on each side and confessing that she's lonely, great as well.

So... yeah.

I finally broke down, snagged a copy, and watched this film with the fiancee...

I have to head out for dinner now, but a few things first:

1 - Eye candy.
2 - Dense story!
3 - Ending felt a bit inconclusive in a few ways.
4 - The fiancee demands a Mimi plushie.

I might have more later.
