Well, time to really sharpen those guitar playing skills:

Kindof unusual to use youtube in this way, but it is pretty ingenious in forcing the player to keep up... Smile

Very cool. Of course I then had to watch all the live versions of this song being performed. What a great song. Does anyone know if this song was written for the movie or if this was a song that was just picked and used in the movie? It is absolutely perfect for the movie.

I think he wrote the movie based off the song haha. Mostly likely knew what he wanted to do but no idea what to write about. THen he heard this song and went that's it!

So it's more the movie fits perfectly with the song. The song is very powerful!

The movie and the song do fit each other very well, but I wouldn't think that the movie was based off of the song. I guess we'll never know, unless one of us asks Mr. Shinkai himself!

According to Wikipedia:

Wikipedia wrote:
The song was also the theme song of the 1996 Japanese movie Moon and Cabbage. The reason Makoto Shinkai chose such a famous song was that he wants to evoke images of everyday happenings, and choosing a song that "everyone knows about" would add realism to the movie.[9]

Ah that's it! The Moon and Cabbage. That was the name of the movie it was used in.

Agreed with everyone, the song fits so perfectly with the 5 CM it seems like it was made especially for it.

I agree, the song fit beautifully with the film; or perhaps it should go the other way around, since the song was written beforehand.

Has anyone seen the original movie that this song was from ? If you have, I'd love to hear what it's about. Might be time to look for that on Amazon.jp Smile

Love the song and love the melodies that come from it that are played at various points in the movie.

In the interview on the R1 DVD, Shinkai said that it was a favorite song of his from several years back. Apparently, it had been a big hit in the 1990's. He said that it was more of an after-thought to use it, although he was probably thinking about it all along while making the anime. They had to get permission to use it, he said, and they were glad when the record label gave its consent.
